AUSTIN, TX - J.R. Giddens scored 19 points including the game winning jumper at the buzzer as the Utah Flash defeated the Austin Toros 93-91 in overtime on Friday night at the Austin Convention Center.
Utah withstood a 14-point rally by the Toros in the second half of a game that was taken into extra periods on Malik Hairston's 3-pointer with 9.6 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
During the third quarter, the Flash would led 68-54 following two free throws by Luke Jackson with 17 seconds left in the period. Austin went on a 13-1 run with less than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter that was capped by Hairston's 3-point basket.
Marcus Williams led the Toros in scoring with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Malik Hairston, who was a perfect 2-of-2 from behind the 3-point line, finished with 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Utah built its lead in the second half thanks to early leads in the first half of the game. Leading by one point going into the second quarter, the Flash looked to build on their early advantage on the Toros. Bill Walker's 3-point basket pushed the Utah advantage to 29-21 with 7:18 remaining in the period. Bill Walker, on assignment from the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics, scored 11 of his 23 points in the second quarter.
Following the second quarter basket by the Boston Celtics' assignee, the Toros would answer with a 9-0 run capped by Ian Mahinmi's two free throws to help Austin regain the lead at 30-29. J.R. Giddens would give the Flash the 43-31 lead going into the lockeroom at halftime with a 16-foot jump shot as time expired in the second quarter.
San Antonio Spurs assignee Ian Mahinmi finished with 7 points and one rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Mahinmi averaged 16.8 points and 8.0 rebounds last season for the Southwest Division champion Toros and was named to the All-NBA D-League First Team and to the NBA D-League All-Star Team.
The Flash improved to 1-0 on the season, while the Toros dropped to 0-1.
The Austin Toros finish their opening weekend home stand with a game tomorrow night against the Tulsa 66ers at 7:30 p.m. For more information, please call 512-236-8333 or visit austintoros.com.
