Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Red Wings got just what the doctor ordered Wednesday night.
A day after playing a 16-inning, 5-hour 17-minute game and burning through 9 different pitchers, the Wings needed only 2 hours and 28 minutes and Kyle Gibson to beat the Toledo Mud Hens Wednesday night, 3-0, at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, OH.
Gibson, the Twins 5th rated prospect, allowed just 4 hits - all singles - and two walks as he threw the first 9-inning complete game for the Wings since Jeff Manship blanked the Norfolk back on June 3, 2010.
A two-run home run by Evan Bigley in the top of the first inning was all Gibson needed as he recorded his second career complete game shutout -- his first since 2010 with the Fort Myers Miracle in just his 5th career start.
Gibson, who struck out a season-high eight, threw 114 pitches, 70 of them for strikes. He joined fellow teammate P.J. Walters as the only two hurlers in the International League to record a complete game shutout this season.
After Bigley's two-run home run in the first inning the game remained 2-0 until the top of the 8th when Doug Bernier added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly scoring Eric Farris to make it 3-0. Bernier went 2-for-3 while Farris and Chris Herrmann each tripled for Rochester.
Ramon Garcia pitched what might have been his best game of the season for Toledo in a losing effort. Garcia went six innings, giving up two runs on four hits. No Toledo player had more than one hit against Gibson.
Chris Colabello finished the game 0-for-4 as his season high nine-game hit streak came to an end. Rochester recorded two triples in the game and extended their streak of hitting at least one extra-base hit to 17 games.
Liam Hendriks (1-2, 4.37 ERA) gets the ball for the Wings on Thursday looking to pitch the Wings to a series win in the finale. Jose Alvarez (1-2, 1.29 ERA) is slated to get the start for Toledo.
WINGS THINGS : The Wings has now won two games in a row for the first time since they won four straight from April 24-27.... Rochester continues to dominate Toledo as they beat them for the 11th time in their last 12 meetings... Bigley left the game in the bottom of the first inning with an apparent wrist injury after diving for a ball in the outfield... After combining for 30 hits in last night's 16-inning affair, the two teams only combined for nine hits in tonight's game. Rochester is now 22-21 in 43 games against Toledo at Fifth Third Field since 2003.
