San Jose Giants News Release
Jose Flores hit an RBI single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the San Jose Giants to a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Thursday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. San Jose tied the score with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Drew Biery's RBI single as the Giants swept the four-game series and won their 10th game in a row. With the victory, San Jose improves their record to 25-16 and moves 1 1/2 games ahead of Modesto (22-16) in the first half North Division race.
The 10 consecutive victories marks the longest winning streak for the Giants since the 1999 team won 11 in a row. The longest winning streak in team history is 11 games (accomplished three times, most recently in 1999).
Joe Paterson (1-0) earned the victory out of the San Jose bullpen after holding the Rawhide scoreless in the 9th and 10th innings. Paterson allowed two hits with no walks and four strikeouts. Ben Wilshire (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO), Brian Anderson (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) and Paterson combined for six shutout innings of relief to finish the game.
The Giants managed only two singles over the first eight innings against Visalia starter Wade Miley and trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the ninth. Ehire Adrianza led off the inning with a line drive single into right center field, but remained at first base after Miley retired Juan Perez on a lineout to right and Francisco Peguero on a strikeout. Down to their last out, Brandon Belt continued the rally for San Jose with a sharp single into center field to put runners on the corners. Biery then stepped to the plate and blooped a 1-0 pitch into shallow right field for a single as Adrianza easily scored the tying run.
Biery's hit prompted a pitching change as Bryan Woodall was summoned from the bullpen and with Johnny Monell at the plate, a botched double steal attempt ended the inning as Belt was tagged out near third base by the catcher Rossmel Perez.
Paterson worked around a one-out single in the top of the 10th as the left-hander struck out Alfredo Marte and Ryan Wheeler back-to-back to end the inning. In the bottom of the frame, Monell led off with a groundball to second base that was mishandled by Victor Estevez for an error. A wild pitch from Woodall advanced Monell to second before Charlie Culberson grounded a single into left to put the potential winning run at third base. Pinch-hitter Wendell Fairley was then intentionally walked to load the bases bringing Flores to the plate. On an 0-1 pitch, Flores drove a high fly ball off the warning track in right field for a single as Monell easily scored the winning run.
Woodall (3-1) was charged with his first loss of the year after yielding the unearned run in the bottom of the 10th. Miley, who came within one out of a complete-game shutout, received a no-decision after working 8 2/3 innings with one run and five hits allowed. Miley struck out seven and walked none.
Aaron King started on the mound for the Giants and fired four innings with one unearned run allowed. King surrendered three hits, walked three and struck out three during his 92-pitch performance.
Visalia initially jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the third inning when Estevez led off with a double, advanced to third on a one-out error and scored on Wheeler's sacrifice fly to left. King was then able to pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the to top of the fourth before handing the game over to the bullpen.
San Jose's only three baserunners against Miley in the first eight innings were Perez's leadoff single in the first, Adrianza's two-out single in the sixth and Biery reaching on a two-out error in the seventh. At one point, Miley retired 16 consecutive Giants hitters from the first through the sixth innings.
Notes: Six of San Jose's 10 consecutive wins have come against Visalia ... The Giants posted a 7-0 record on the homestand ... Three of the seven wins were in the final inning with Flores providing the game-winning hit on two occasions (May 14 vs. Bakersfield) ... Flores extended his hitting streak to nine games with his 10th inning single ... Both clubs finished the contest with seven hits ... The 10-game win streak is tied for the fourth longest in San Jose Giants history ... Visalia was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
On Deck: The Giants begin a season-long nine-game road trip on Friday evening with a doubleheader against the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field. The first game begins at 5:05 PM and is the completion of the April 11 suspended game between the teams. The game will resume in the top of the third inning with San Jose ahead by a 7-2 score. The contest will not affect San Jose's 10-game winning streak because it was started on April 11. Friday's nightcap, which will be a seven-inning game, is scheduled to begin approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the first game. Both games of the doubleheader can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.
