Flores Triple Extends Giants Win Streak To Nine

May 20, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Jose Flores hit a go-ahead two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning propelling the San Jose Giants to their ninth consecutive win, a 4-2 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Flores, Juan Perez and Drew Biery each rapped out three hits as San Jose took their third straight game in the series. With the win, the Giants improve their record to 24-16 and maintain a one-game lead over the Modesto Nuts (22-16) in the first half North Division race.

Flores (3-for-4, 2 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) had three extra-base hits while Perez (3-for-4, 2B, 3B) finished a home run shy of the cycle to lead the San Jose offensive attack. Biery (3-for-4) and Brandon Belt (2-for-4, SB) also produced multi-hit games at the plate.

David Quinowski (2-1) earned the victory out of the Giants bullpen despite allowing the tying run in the top of the seventh. Quinowski struck out four over two innings with one run and three hits allowed. Jason Stoffel (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) worked a 1-2-3 top of the ninth to earn his seventh save of the year.

With the game tied 2-2, Biery led off the bottom of the eighth with a groundball single into left field. With two outs, James Simmons drew a walk to put runners on first and second and then Flores lined the first pitch of his at-bat into the left center field gap for the go-ahead two-run triple.

Kyle Nicholson started on the mound for San Jose and worked six innings with just one run and six hits allowed. The right-hander walked three and struck out four.

Visalia initially took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Brent Greer singled with one out, stole second and then scored on Paul Goldschmidt's two-out single.

The Giants immediately answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first as Perez led off with a triple to deep right center field before scoring when the next hitter, Francisco Peguero, lifted a sacrifice fly to center. San Jose then went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning as Belt singled with one out, stole second, advanced to third on Biery's line drive single into left and then scored when the throw back into the infield from left fielder Marc Krauss bounced away for an error.

Nicholson worked out of trouble in the top of the fifth as a pair of singles put runners on first and second with one out. However, Goldschmidt and Krauss each grounded out to end the threat. In the sixth, Kyle Greene drew a one-out walk, but Nicholson induced Rossmel Perez to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Quinowski relieved Nicholson to begin the seventh and allowed a leadoff single to Alfredo Marte. Dan Kaczrowski followed with a sacrifice bunt attempt, but Marte was forced at second base for the first out of the inning. Kaczrowski then stole second with two outs before scoring the tying run when Ryan Wheeler lined a single into center.

Quinowski recovered to strikeout a pair in a scoreless eighth before Jason Stoffel needed only 10 pitches in the ninth to seal the victory.

Visalia reliever Victor Capellan (2-2) suffered the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits over two innings. Rawhide starter Dan Taylor, who was making his California League debut after a recent promotion from Low-A South Bend, scattered 10 hits and yielded two runs (one earned) in six innings.
