Vancouver Giants News Release
The Vancouver Giants have opened up the month of December with three wins in three nights this past weekend in Western Hockey League action.
Friday night, goaltender Dustin Slade needed to make just 14 saves for his third shut-out of the season in a 4-0 win at home against the Seattle Thunderbirds. J.D. Watt, Cody Franson, Paul Albers, and Keith Voytechek all scored in the Giants victory.
Saturday, the Giants capped off their home-and-home series with the T-Birds with a 3-1 win at the Key Arena. Mario Bliznak snapped a 20-game goal-less drought with a short-handed marker while David Rutherford scored for the first time in 14 games in what was a power play, game-winning tally for the Giants. Slade was called up to make 33 saves for his 13th win of the season. The Giants were out-shot 33-18 by Seattle, just the second time all season the Giants have been out-shot by their opponents.
Sunday, Vancouver pulled out a 3-2 win against the Kamloops Blazers at the Interior Savings Centre. Tim Kraus and Michal Repik each had a goal and an assist while Kenton Dulle scored his first ever WHL goal in the victory. Netminder Tommy Tartaglione made 23 saves for the Giants, who have now earned at least one point in their last eight straight games on the road.
The Giants now sport a record of 18-7-0-4, good enough for 40 points and sole possession of second place in the B.C. Division. Vancouver has only lost one game in regulation in their last 15 outings. They are first overall in the WHL on the penalty kill and second overall on the power play.
This week, the Giants will play four games over a span of five nights, all against Western Conference opponents. Wednesday December 7 the Giants entertain the Prince George Cougars (7:00pm). Friday December 9, the Everett Silvertips visit the Pacific Coliseum (7:30pm). Saturday December 10, the Giants travel to Portland for a battle against the Winterhawks (7:00pm). Sunday December 11, the Giants wrap up the weekend by hosting the Kelowna Rockets (5:00pm).
