San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Jack Snodgrass allowed just two runs over seven innings and the San Jose Giants knocked out 13 hits in a 5-3 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Wednesday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose never trailed in the contest and held off a late Modesto rally to take two out of three games in the series. The Giants have not lost a series at home this season while they improved their record at Municipal Stadium to a sizzling 19-4.
Snodgrass (5-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning en route to picking-up his fifth win of the year. The left-hander, who matched a career-high in innings pitched, allowed just two hits during his stint on the mound. He walked two and struck out five. Phil McCormick was able to pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the eighth for San Jose before Chris Wilson tossed a scoreless ninth inning for his third save of the season.
Ryan Lollis (3-for-4, 2B, RBI, SB) and Jarrett Parker (3-for-4, SB) had three hits each to lead the Giants offensive attack. Eight different San Jose players recorded at least one hit in the win.
The Giants jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the third inning against Modesto starting pitcher Christian Bergman. Parker led off the frame with an infield single before he was forced at second when the next batter, Carter Jurica, reached on a fielder's choice. Lollis then doubled to deep left center to put runners on second and third before Joe Panik's infield single to shortstop plated Jurica with the first run of the night.
San Jose extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth as the first five hitters of the inning all came through with hits. Lollis led off with a single before Panik's double put a pair of runners in scoring position. Adam Duvall then delivered an RBI single for the first run of the inning. Ricky Oropesa followed by driving a ball off the fence in center as Panik scored for a 3-0 advantage. On the play, Oropesa, who was credited with just a single, was ruled out after passing Duvall in-between first and second. The rally though would continue as Andrew Susac belted a double into the right center field gap to score Duvall to make it 4-0.
Snodgrass cruised through the first five innings facing just one batter over the minimum. He retired the first seven batters that he faced with the Nuts' first baserunner coming in the top of the third when Dallas Tarleton reached on an error. The inning though quickly ended when Snodgrass induced the next hitter, Cristhian Adames, to bounce into a 6-4-3 double play.
Snodgrass worked a 1-2-3 top of the fourth and then pitched around a two-out walk in the fifth. Modesto finally picked-up their first hit of the game when Tarleton led off the top of the sixth with a double to deep left center field. Adames followed with a line drive to right that bounced under the glove of the sliding Devin Harris. Adames raced into third on the play for a triple as Tarleton easily scored. Adames came home two batters later on Tim Smalling's groundout to shortstop.
The Giants got one of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning as Parker led off with a single, stole second and scored on Lollis' one-out single.
With San Jose leading 5-2, Snodgrass returned to the mound in the top of the seventh and pitched around a leadoff walk to keep the Nuts off the scoreboard. Snodgrass finished his night by inducing Kyle Parker to ground into a double play.
Stephen Harrold (1/3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) relieved Snodgrass to begin the top of the eighth and allowed a leadoff single to Jayson Langfels before hitting Tarleton with a pitch. Harrold recovered to strikeout Adames, but the new pitcher McCormick (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 SO) entered the game and promptly walked Rafael Ortega on four pitches to load the bases. Smalling followed by also drawing a walk as Langfels scored to bring Modesto to within 5-3. McCormick though settled down as he struck out California League RBI- leader Corey Dickerson before Jared Clark struck out on three pitches to end the inning.
Wilson (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) allowed a leadoff double to Bryce Massanari in the top of the ninth before Langfels walked with one out to bring the potential go-ahead run to the plate. However, Wilson quickly fanned Tarleton for the second out and then retired Adames on a groundout to finish the contest.
Bergman (4-3) was saddled with the loss after yielding four runs (all earned) on eight hits in four-plus innings of work. He walked two and struck out three.
