San Jose Giants News Release

MODESTO - Justin Schumer fired six no-hit innings in his California League debut as the San Jose Giants rolled to an 8-0 victory over the Modesto Nuts on Sunday afternoon at John Thurman Field. The Giants took three out of four games in the season-opening series after four pitchers combined on a four-hit shutout in the convincing win.

Schumer (1-0) struck out three, walked none and hit one batter during his dominant stint on the mound. The only baserunners against the right-hander were Brett Tanos getting hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first and Chandler Laurent reaching via an error in the second. Schumer, who threw 68 pitches, retired the last 13 batters that he faced.

Bobby Haney (4-for-4, 2 2B, RBI) had two singles and two doubles as part of a perfect day at the plate to lead the Giants offensively. Jarrett Parker (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also had a multi-hit game, including a key run-scoring double in the fourth inning. Ryan Lollis (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and Alex Burg (1-for-3, 2 RBI) drove home two runs each.

San Jose took the early lead with a single run in the top of the second inning against Nuts starter Christian Bergman. Adam Duvall led off by drawing a walk before moving to second on Luke Anders' groundout. A wild pitch advanced Duvall to third and then Ricky Oropesa delivered a sacrifice fly to left for a 1-0 Giants advantage.

In the third, Haney began a run-scoring rally with a double down the right field line. After Chris Lofton's sacrifice bunt moved Haney to third, Lollis hit a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0.

San Jose extended their lead with three runs in the top of the fifth as consecutive one-out walks to Anders and Oropesa started the rally. Parker was up next and he ripped the 10th pitch of the at-bat off the fence in deep right field for an RBI double. Burg followed with a sacrifice fly and then Haney doubled home Parker for a 5-0 cushion.

Meanwhile, Schumer made quick work of the Nuts tossing 1-2-3 third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. He needed only nine pitches in the fourth inning, six pitches in the fifth and nine pitches in the sixth. Schumer recorded eight fly ball outs and seven groundouts, in addition to his three strikeouts during his six innings.

The Giants kept the pressure on offensively with two more runs in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Haney singled and Lofton walked to put runners on first and second. Lollis then singled sharply to left plating Haney with San Jose's sixth run of the contest. Lofton scored the second run of the frame when the next batter, Joe Panik, reached on an error.

The Giants made it 8-0 in the top of the eighth as Oropesa doubled with one out and scored on Burg's two-out single to left.

Jose Valdez (1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) relieved Schumer in the bottom of the seventh and promptly allowed a leadoff single to Dallas Tarleton - Modesto's first hit of the afternoon. Valdez also surrendered a two-out single to Corey Dickerson, but managed to keep the Nuts off the scoreboard.

Seth Rosin (1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) yielded a one-out single to Helder Velazquez followed by a double to Christhian Adames putting runners on second and third. Rosin, however, kept the shutout intact with back-to-back strikeouts of Scott Robinson and Tanos.

Stephen Harrold (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) then needed only six pitches to work a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to finish the game.

Bergman (0-1) suffered the loss for Modesto after allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits in four innings of work. He walked three and struck out three.
