Blaze Take Win, Series Split Sunday
April 8, 2012 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The sun was shining, the candy-filled Easter eggs were ready to be located by Bakersfield Blaze Kids Clubbers, but before the hunt, we had a game, and the Blaze toppled the Visalia Rawhide 5-2 to earn a series split in front of 269 at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.
In a much quicker contest, Blaze starter Tony Cingrani (W, 1-0) solved the strike-throwing issue that had plagued both teams during the first 3 games of the series. Tony was dominant against a listless Rawhide lineup that played every bit as tired as they looked. Cingrani went 6.0 innings in the win, allowing just a single and a walk while striking out 4. Brooks Pinckard and Wilkin De La Rosa pitched the game's final 2 frames.
On the offensive side, the Blaze did their damage in two quick bursts. In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Bakersfield capitalized on 2 Rawhide defensive miscues to score a pair of unearned runs, and in the 4th, Travis Mattair found a fastball he liked and clanged it off the massive sunscreen beyond the centerfield fence for a 3-run homer.
That would prove to be more than enough for the Blaze, who dealt Visalia's starting righthander Mike Bolsinger (L, 0-1) a loss in his first start at High-A. The Rawhide got their runs late on Yazy Arbelo's 2nd homer of the season, a solo shot, and a 9th inning sacrifice fly off the bat of Bobby Borchering.
With the win, the Blaze improves to 2-2 on the young season. The homestand continues Monday through Wednesday with a three-set against the Stockton Ports. Monday is Dollar Day, where bleacher seats and hot dogs are just a buck. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15pm, with Stockton's Josh Bowman going up against Kyle Lotzkar. The game will be broadcast live through the Blaze website, BakersfieldBlaze.com by Blaze radio announcer Dan Besbris.
