San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants went into the All-Star break on a high note following a 14-4 victory over the Visalia Rawhide on Sunday evening at Excite Ballpark. A six-run bottom of the third inning rally put the Giants ahead for good while Jared Dupere and Yorlis Rodriguez added late three-run homers en route to the blowout win. With the victory, San Jose took four of six games in the series against Visalia and enters the four-day break with a 50-37 overall record (10-11 in second half).
Dupere (3-for-4, HR, 5 RBI) added a two-run single earlier in the game as part of a banner night at the plate from the ninth spot in the order. Rodriguez (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI), Victor Bericoto (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) and Hayden Cantrelle (1-for-3, 2 RBI) also drove in multiple runs for the Giants.
San Jose trailed initially on Sunday as the Rawhide scored twice in the top of the first inning off of Giants starter Seth Lonsway to take a 2-0 lead. With one out, Alvin Guzman singled, stole second and then scored on Deyvison De Los Santos' two-out double. JJ D'Orazio followed with a single to plate De Los Santos with the second run of the inning.
San Jose immediately answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Aeverson Arteaga led off with a single, stole second and came home on Bericoto's one-out double to deep left center to cut the Visalia lead to 2-1.
After Lonsway tossed back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the second and third, the Giants erupted in the bottom of the third sending 10 batters to plate during a six-run, five-hit frame. San Jose loaded the bases with none out on a single from Arteaga, a walk to Grant McCray and a Bericoto single. Carter Williams then hit a slow grounder to first that saw Arteaga forced at home for the first out. Cantrelle was up next though and he lined a single into center plating both McCray and Bericoto to give the Giants a 3-2 lead.
After Rodriguez struck out for the second out, Garrett Frechette hit a seemingly routine grounder to shortstop, but the throw from the Rawhide's Juan Corniel pulled first baseman Oscar Santos off the bag. The error allowed both Williams and Cantrelle to score for a 5-2 advantage.
Ronaldo Flores was up next and he doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third before Dupere singled into right plating two more to make it 7-2.
The Giants were then in control for the remainder of the contest. Matt Mikulski relieved Lonsway to begin the top of the fourth and tossed four strong innings out of the bullpen with only one unearned run allowed. Mikulski surrendered four hits, walked one and struck out four during his outing. The only run Visalia scored against Mikulski came in the top of the sixth as De Los Santos reached on a two-out error and came home two batters later on Jacen Roberson's double to trim the San Jose lead to 7-3.
The Giants though got the run right back in the bottom of the sixth. Dupere led off with a single, Arteaga walked and Bericoto drove in his second run of the night with an RBI single.
San Jose then kept the pressure on with a three-run seventh inning. Singles from Rodriguez and Flores put runners on first and second with one out before Dupere stepped to the plate and launched a 415-foot home run to deep center. The homer was Dupere's second of the season and it extended the Giants lead to 11-3.
The Rawhide scored once in the top of the eighth before San Jose hit another three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Williams singled with one out to start the rally before a walk to Cantrelle. Rodriguez was up next and he lined a ball over the fence in deep left for a three-run round-tripper and a 14-4 cushion. It was Rodriguez's eighth home run of the season.
Tyler Myrick sealed the victory for the Giants with a scoreless top of the ninth.
