San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE - Justin Schumer and four relievers combined to limit Visalia to a single run as the San Jose Giants earned a 5-1 win over the Rawhide on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. Jarrett Parker homered while Carter Jurica added a key two-RBI double to help the Giants claim the series. The victory was San Jose's fourth in their last five games.
Schumer (5-4) picked-up the win after allowing just two singles over 5 1/3 scoreless innings. The right-hander pitched around four walks and matched a season-high with six strikeouts. Edward Concepcion recorded the final two outs of the contest with the potential tying run in the on-deck circle to record the save.
Jurica (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) was the only Giants player to finish with more than one hit. San Jose out-hit Visalia by a 7-6 margin.
The Giants took the early lead with a single run in the bottom of the first against Rawhide starter Anthony Meo. Jurica led off with a single before Joe Panik drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Adam Duvall was up next and he lined a double off the fence in deep left center field to plate Jurica with the first run of the night. Meo though was able to limit the damage in the inning as the right-hander struck out the next three hitters, Ricky Oropesa, Andrew Susac and Parker, to keep the score 1-0.
Parker extended the San Jose lead to 2-0 when he belted a solo homer to left center in the bottom of the fourth. The home run was Parker's eighth of the season.
Schumer allowed just one hit over the first five innings - a one-out single from Garrett Weber in the top of the first. Schumer stranded two runners on base in the first inning and had set down six Rawhide batters in a row until Ender Inciarte walked with one out in the third. Weber though followed by grounding into an inning-ending double play.
Schumer then worked around a one-out hit by pitch in the top of the fourth and a pair of walks in the fifth inning to keep Visalia off the scoreboard. In the top of the sixth, Mike Freeman led off with a single before Schumer retired the next batter, Jon Griffin, on a fly out to center. Phil McCormick (1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) was then summoned from the bullpen and he set down Yazy Arbelo on a line out to right before new pitcher Drew Bowlin (1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) induced Keon Broxton to ground into a fielder's choice to end the inning.
The Giants broke the game open with a three-run bottom of the sixth inning. Susac started the frame with a single before Parker drew a walk. After Alex Burg flied out, Luke Anders hit a sharp grounder to first that bounced off the glove of Griffin and down the right field line. The error allowed Anders to reach base and Susac to score. Then with two outs, Jurica smacked a double off the wall in straightaway center bringing home both Parker and Anders to make it 5-0.
Josh Osich (2 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) relieved Bowlin to begin the top of the seventh and promptly tossed two scoreless innings. Osich worked around a two-out single in the top of the seventh and a one-out walk in the eighth. The Rawhide finally broke through in the top of the ninth as Broxton led off with a single before Carter Bell's one-out single to deep right put runners on the corners. Ryan LaPensee followed with a line drive single into left center to score a run bringing Visalia to within 5-1. Concepcion (2/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) though entered out of the bullpen and quickly ended the game by retiring Inciarte on a line out to center before Weber struck out looking.
Meo (5-5) suffered the loss for the Rawhide after yielding five runs (two earned) on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked four and struck out six.
