San Jose Giants News Release
The San Jose Giants posted their league-leading sixth shutout of the season with a 6-0 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Wednesday afternoon at Excite Ballpark. San Jose hurlers Seth Lonsway, Matt Mikulski, Tyler Myrick and John Gavin combined on a three-hitter with 16 strikeouts in a dominant effort on the mound. The win was the Giants' (54-38, 14-12 second half) second straight to open the series, third in a row overall and their eighth in the last 10 games.
Lonsway fired four scoreless innings in his start with a career-high tying seven strikeouts. The left-hander allowed only one hit and worked around three walks. Mikulski (4-3) was credited with the win after registering five strikeouts in his three shutout innings of relief. Myrick and Gavin then tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively to seal the shutout.
Offensively, San Jose jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a four-run bottom of the third inning. The Giants managed only one hit in the inning, but took advantage of two walks, two hit batters and two wild pitches. Anyesber Sivira was hit by a pitch to start the frame before consecutive walks to Grant McCray and Hayden Cantrelle loaded the bases with none out. After Aeverson Arteaga struck out, Carter Williams stepped to the plate and grounded a single through the hole on the left side to bring home Sivira and McCray with the first two runs of the day.
A double steal from Cantrelle and Williams then put runners on second and third before a wild pitch uncorked by Rancho Cucamonga's Gabe Emmett brought home another run. Then after Yorlis Rodriguez was plunked, another wild pitch from Emmett scored Williams to make it 4-0.
Meanwhile, Lonsway had begun his start by cruising through three scoreless innings. He struck out two batters in each of the first three frames. Lonsway had retired 10 of the first 11 hitters that he faced before issuing three straight one-out walks in the top of the fourth that loaded the bases. The San Jose starter though was able to escape when he induced the next batter, Kenneth Betancourt, to ground into a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.
The Giants extended their lead to 5-0 with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fourth. After the first two batters of the inning were set down, McCray doubled and then scored when Cantrelle singled into right center.
Mikulski relieved Lonsway to begin the top of the fifth and would keep the Quakes off the board over the next three innings. The left-hander worked around a one-out walk in the fifth before breezing through a 1-2-3 sixth inning. In the seventh, Betancourt singled with one out for Rancho Cucamonga's first hit since the first inning before Mikulski issued a two-out walk. Mikulski though came back to strikeout Hector Martinez to retire the side.
San Jose completed the scoring for the day with a single tally in the bottom of the seventh. McCray led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third when the throw from Quakes catcher Marco Hernandez sailed into center. Another wild pitch then scored a run as McCray came home to make it 6-0.
Myrick entered from the bullpen in the eighth and collected one strikeout in a perfect inning. In the ninth, Yunior Garcia greeted Gavin with a double for only Rancho's third hit of the contest. Gavin though struck out the next three hitters to finish the game and complete the shutout.
