San Jose Giants News Release

The Giants rallied from an early three-run deficit on Tuesday night in a 5-4 series-opening win over the Visalia Rawhide at Recreation Park. A two-run sixth-inning rally highlighted by an RBI single from Sandro Fabian and a run-scoring double off the bat of Dalton Combs proved to be the difference in the game before the San Jose closed it out late to secure the victory. The Giants (16-17) have now won five of six to pull within two games of first-place Visalia (18-15) in the second half North Division race.

San Jose starter Jose Marte shook off a rocky beginning to his night to deliver another effective outing. Marte surrendered a leadoff home run to Eduardo Diaz in the bottom of the first before issuing three straight walks to load the bases. Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Camden Duzenack and Ryan Grotjohn followed to extend the Rawhide lead to 3-0, but Visalia would get nothing else against the Giants right-hander.

San Jose's comeback effort began with a run in the top of the second. David Villar led off the frame by drawing a walk, moved to second on a Courtney Hawkins groundout and scored when Fabian lined a single into center.

The Giants then tied the game with a two-run top of the fourth. Villar's shallow fly ball was dropped by right fielder Max Murphy for a two-base error to start the inning. Hawkins then stepped to the plate and blasted an RBI double off the left center wall to bring San Jose to within 3-2. Fabian's deep fly out to center would advance Hawkins to third before a Combs sacrifice fly to right brought the Giants even at 3-3.

Meanwhile, Marte cruised after his first-inning struggles. He finished his start with four straight scoreless innings from the second through the fifth allowing just one hit during the stretch. Marte retired 14 of the final 16 batters he faced following the three straight walks in the bottom of the first.

San Jose would take their first lead of the night with the sixth-inning rally. Joey Bart started things off with a line drive single into left center. With one out, Hawkins grounded a single into center to put runners on first and second. Fabian then blooped a single into shallow left to bring home Bart from second with the go-ahead tally. Combs followed with a line drive double into the right field corner as Hawkins scored for a 5-3 advantage.

The five runs would be enough for the Giants as the bullpen then hung on late. Luis Amaya took over to begin the bottom of the sixth and began his night with a scoreless frame working around a leadoff single. In the seventh, Joe Gillette hammered a two-out RBI double off the right field fence to trim the San Jose lead to 5-4. The hit chased Amaya, but Olbis Parra entered and promptly set down Diaz on a groundout to end the inning.

Parra then needed just eight pitches to breeze through a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth. Jamie Callahan was summoned to begin the bottom of the ninth and the veteran right-hander would slam the door. Duzenack struck out on three pitches to begin the inning before a one-out single from Grotjohn put the tying run on base. Callahan though would induce the next hitter, Murphy, to bounce into a double play to shortstop ending the game.
