San Jose Giants News Release
MODESTO - The San Jose Giants were held to five hits in a 5-1 loss to the Modesto Nuts on Saturday evening at John Thurman Field. Nuts starting pitcher Leuris Gomez struck out six over five scoreless innings before two relievers combined to allow just one run over the last four frames as Modesto claimed their second straight game in the series.
Adam Duvall's (1-for-4, HR, RBI) team-leading 19th homer of the season accounted for San Jose's only run in the loss. The Nuts out-hit the Giants by a 9-5 margin.
Modesto jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a single run in the bottom of the first against San Jose starter Taylor Rogers. With one out, Cristhian Adames hammered a triple into the left center field gap and then scored when the batter, Brett Tanos, grounded out to shortstop.
Trailing 1-0, the Giants threatened in the top of the third as Andrew Susac led off with a double down the right field line, but Gomez struck out the next three hitters to end the inning.
The Nuts then scored twice in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead. With one out, consecutive singles from Jayson Langfels and Rafael Ortega put runners at first and second. Adames followed with a single up the middle to plate Langfels with the second run of the night while Ortega advanced to third. Then as Tanos struck out, Adames stole second base. However on the play, as the catcher Susac's throw went to second, Ortega raced home to successfully execute a double steal.
San Jose had the leadoff batter reach base against Gomez in the fourth and fifth innings, but failed to score in each frame. In the top of the fourth, Joe Panik led off with a single, but Gomez promptly set down the next three hitters. Then in the fifth, Jarrett Parker reached on an error to begin the inning, but again the next three batters were retired.
Modesto extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth as Tanos singled with two outs before Kyle Parker delivered an RBI triple into the right field corner.
The Giants' lone run of the contest came in the top of the sixth when Duvall belted a two-out, solo homer to deep left field off of reliever Kraig Sitton. The blast brought San Jose to within 4-1.
The Giants then put a runner at third with one out in the top of the seventh, but did not score. Alex Burg led off with a single before Parker grounded out to first. After the out on Parker, Nuts first baseman Jared Clark's throw bounced off the glove of the shortstop Adames in attempt to retire Burg and complete a double play. The error allowed Burg to advance all the way to third. However, Susac followed by grounding into a fielder's choice to third as Burg was easily thrown out at home before Page grounded out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Ortega led off with a home run to deep right center off of reliever Shawn Sanford to make it 5-1.
San Jose's last two innings offensively ended with double plays as Modesto closed out the victory. In the eighth, Carter Jurica singled with one out, but Panik followed by grounding into a double play. Then in the ninth, Ricky Oropesa drew a one-out walk, but Burg bounced into another double play to end the game.
Rogers (7-10) suffered the loss for the Giants after yielding four runs (all earned) on seven hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out three.
Gomez (4-5), who allowed only two hits during his stint on the mound, was credited with the win.
