San Jose Giants News Release

LANCASTER - The Lancaster JetHawks rallied from an early two-run deficit to hand the San Jose Giants a 4-2 defeat on Tuesday evening at The Hangar. The Giants have now lost the first two games of the series scoring a total of just three runs against JetHawks pitching.

Mitch Delfino (2-for-5, RBI) was the only San Jose player to finish with a multi-hit game on Tuesday. The Giants plated two runs in the top of the first inning, but didn't score again for the remainder of the night. Lancaster took the lead for good with a two-run bottom of the fifth.

Trailing 2-1, the pivotal bottom of the fifth began for the JetHawks with a single from Jordan Scott off of San Jose starter Chris Stratton. After a Justin Gominsky sacrifice bunt, Tony Kemp hit a grounder in the hole on the right side of the infield. Giants second baseman Alberto Robles fielded the ball in shallow right field, but his throw to first was wide and bounced past first baseman Brian Ragira. Kemp was credited with a single on the play while Scott raced home on the throwing error to tie the game 2-2. Teoscar Hernandez then stepped to the plate and crushed a triple to the fence in straightaway center field as Kemp scored to give Lancaster a 3-2 lead. Stratton limited the damage in the inning by striking out the next hitter, Carlos Correa, before Rio Ruiz grounded out.

The JetHawks though kept the pressure on in the bottom of the sixth as Brandon Meredith led off with a single before taking second on a wild pitch. Dan Gulbransen then singled home Meredith to make it 4-2 and end Stratton's night.

Stratton (1-1) was saddled with his first loss of the season after yielding four runs (all earned) on nine hits over five-plus innings of work. The right-hander walked one and struck out four. Stratton limited Lancaster to just one run - a Meredith solo homer in the bottom of the second - over the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.

San Jose's lone offense came in the top of the first scoring twice off of JetHawks starter Kyle Smith. Jesus Galindo began the game by drawing a walk before stealing second. With one out, Delfino grounded a single up the middle to plate Galindo with the first run of the game. Smith then issued three straight walks to Mac Williamson, Ragira and Ben Turner to force home the second run of the frame. Smith though kept the score at 2-0 when he retired Chuckie Jones on a pop out to shortstop and struck out Chris Lofton to leave the bases loaded.

The Giants then managed only three hits over the next six innings - a fourth-inning bunt single from Galindo, a Delfino single in the top of the fifth and a Robles single to leadoff the seventh. All three players though were erased on the basepaths with Galindo and Robles caught stealing and Delfino picked-off at first.

Down 4-2, San Jose threatened in the top of the eighth, but again was kept off the scoreboard. With two outs, Ragira and Turner delivered back-to-back singles before Jones drew a full-count walk to load the bases. Lofton was up next, however he grounded out to first on a 2-0 pitch to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth, Rando Moreno singled with two outs to bring the potential tying run to the plate, but Delfino followed by grounding into a force out to end the game.

Mitch Lambson (1-0), who held the Giants scoreless over the fourth and fifth innings, was credited with the win. Smith worked the first three innings for the JetHawks allowing two runs (both earned) on one hit with five walks and one strikeout. Jamaine Cotton tossed a scoreless top of the ninth for his first save of the year.
