Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - The JetHawks stayed close despite Kyle Smith's early struggles and battled back to beat the San Jose Giants 4-2 on Tuesday night at The Hangar.
Smith walked four batters in the first and allowed two runs but stranded runners at each base and settled down to pitch three innings with allowing another run.
Brandon Meredith put the JetHawks on the board in the second inning with an opposite field shot off first round pick Chris Stratton.
Lancaster stayed close with Smith on the mound and, after two scoreless innings of relief from Mitch Lambson, came back to take the lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Jordan Scott led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second base before Tony Kemp picked up an infield single. Giants second baseman Alberto Robles threw the ball intro foul territory in an attempt to get Kemp at first allowing Scott to score.
Teoscar Hernandez followed with a triple to centerfield to give the JetHawks the lead.
The JetHawks added a run in the sixth inning and chased Stratton. Meredith led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Dan Gulbransen base-hit. Stratton was charged with four runs on nine hits in five-plus innings.
Lance McCullers took over for Lambson and struck out four over three innings of work. He pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning to keep the JetHawks up by two.
Jamaine Cotton pitched a scoreless ninth to notch Lancaster's first save of the season. Lambson (1-0) was credited with the victory.
The win was the third in a row for the JetHawks (4-2) who will look to sweep the Giants (3-3) on Wednesday night at The Hangar. Chris Devenski and Josh Hader will pitch against Giants right-hander Kendry Flores. First pitch is 6:30 p.m.
All first responders will receive half price admission at box office as part of Local Heroes Wednesday.
