Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA (June 3rd, 2013) -- In their first meeting since late April, the Giants picked up right where they left off against the Nuts, shutting them out 5-0 on Monday night at John Thurman Field.
Modesto (26-31), who won the first meeting of the season between the two clubs, has now lost six in a row to first-place San Jose (35-22).
The Nuts managed only three hits in the contest as they were shutout for the fourth time this season, and the second time by San Jose. Modesto scored three runs in their last game on Sunday, but managed only three hits in that game as well.
Ben Alsup (3-6) would last six innings in the defeat, giving up four runs on five hits, but only two were earned. Giants outfielder Mac Williamson got the scoring started with a lead-off home run in the second.
The Giants would go 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the contest, but took advantage of several Nuts mistakes. Modesto had a defensive collapse in the fourth as San Jose would score two unearned runs on a bloop single by Angel Villalona and three Nuts errors. In the fifth, the Giants plated their final run against Alsup on a bases-loaded groundout by Williamson.
Giants starter Jason Forjet (2-0), who was making just his third start of his professional career, frustrated Modesto in six innings, allowing only two singles to Niko Gallego. Forjet would strike out eight and walk two. The 23-year-old was called up to provide support for a beat up Giants rotation that has three starters on the disabled list. Forjet had never pitched above rookie-ball until making his three recent starts in the Cal League.
Modesto put two in scoring position against him in the sixth, but a fly ball by Taylor Featherston died on the warning track in left to keep the Nuts off the board. Three Giants relievers held the Nuts to just one hit the rest of the way, while racking up six strikeouts. In total, San Jose totaled 14 punchouts.
Jared Simon picked up the only extra-base hit for Modesto, a 2-out double against Luis Rojas in the seventh. Villalona led San Jose's attack, going 3-for-4 with a walk, while Williamson drove in a pair.
Modesto will try to snap their skid against the Giants as they return for game two of a three game set at John Thurman Field. RHP Eddie Butler (0-1, 5.73) will get the start, opposite LHP Kelvin Marte (2-1, 3.13) for the Giants. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
