Fontana Returns in Loss to Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. - Shortstop Nolan Fontana was activated from the disabled list prior to Monday's game and doubled in three at-bats as the JetHawks fell to the Stockton Ports, 4-2, at Banner Island Ballpark.
Fontana doubled to leadoff the sixth inning but was tagged out on his way to third to start an inning-ending double play. He was removed after the play as the JetHawks try to ease him back in after missing two and a half weeks.
Ports starter James Simmons (2-1) put together the best start for a JetHawks opponent this season. The right-hander tossed seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and striking out four. He did not allow a walk.
The JetHawks, who outhit the Ports in the game 8-to-4, were unable to come up with big hits with runners on base. Matt Duffy went 3-for-3 but was left on base in the third and fourth innings.
Lancaster had two men on in the second inning with one out but Fontana flew out and Andrew Aplin grounded out to third.
The Ports got on the board in the first inning. Luis Cruz hit the leadoff batter Bobby Crocker and then advanced him to second base with a walk. Max Muncy later singled up the middle to score Crocker and give the Ports the lead.
Cruz pitched well into the fifth inning when the Ports tagge him for three runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Russell hit weak ground ball back to the mound that kicked off the leg of Cruz and died in the middle of the infield for a single allowing a run to score.
Muncy followed with a shattered bat bloop single to centerfield which scored two runs.
Jonas Dufek was called upon from the bullpen and retired the final batter of the inning without anymore damage.
Kyle Hallock, the tandem starter, did not allow a hit or a run over three innings of work.
Lancaster scored two runs in the eighth inning to get closer. Duffy led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Delino DeShields hit. DeShields took off for second base while the ball was in the hands of the centerfielder and legged out a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an Aplin ground ball.
Blake Hassebrock recorded the final out of the eighth inning and then tossed a perfect ninth for his first save.
Preston Tucker went 0-for-4 to end his hitting streak at 17 games.
The JetHawks (35-22) take on the Ports (31-26) at 11:05 am on Tuesday. Aaron West (2-1, 4.72) will get the start.
