Giants' Benson Named WHL Player of the Week

Calgary, AB - The Western Hockey League announced today that Vancouver Giants forward Tyler Benson has been named the WHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 6th, 2015.

Benson recorded eight points (2g-6a) in four games to guide the Vancouver Giants to a record of 2-2-0-0 for the week.

On Wednesday, December 2nd against the Medicine Hat Tigers, the Giants captain notched a pair of assists to lead his Club to a 6-0 shutout victory. On Friday, December 4th, Benson again tallied two assists as the Giants went on to blank the Kootenay ICE 4-0 and was named the game's first star. The following night against the Everett Silvertips, Benson scored the lone goal for Vancouver in their 3-1 defeat. On Sunday, December 6th, Benson capped off a productive week by recording a three-point outing (1g-2a) to go along with a plus-three rating in the Giants' 6-5 loss to the Prince George Cougars.

The 17-year-old Edmonton, AB native has collected 19 points (7g-12a) in 20 games so far this season. The 6-0, 196 lb forward is in his second campaign with Vancouver and has amassed 64 points (21g-43a) in 89 career WHL regular season contests. Benson is eligible for the 2016 NHL Draft.

The WHL has also nominated Ty Edmonds of the Prince George Cougars for the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week award. Edmonds, a 1996-born netminder from Winnipeg, MB, posted a record of 3-0-0-0 with a 0.77 goals against average and a .973 save percentage with one shutout last week. On Tuesday, December 1st, Edmonds turned aside 31 shots to claim second star honours in the Cougars' 3-2 win against the Portland Winterhawks. The following night against the Winterhawks, Edmonds came on in relief early in the second period and stopped 15 shots to help the Cougars come back to win by a score of 5-3. On Friday, December 4th, Edmonds stopped 27 to pick up his second shutout of the season as the Cougars took down the Everett Silvertips 3-0. Edmonds was named the game's second star for his efforts. Currently in his third season with Prince George, Edmonds has posted a 57-47-5-7 record with four shutouts in 131 career WHL regular season appearances.
