Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
The expansion Saint John Sea Dogs second pick in the Canadian Hockey League Import Draft is Felix Schutz, a 17-year-old centre who played for the German national team at the World Under 18 tournament this spring in the Czech Republic.
Schutz, 5'11" and 183 pounds, played last season for the Landshut Cannibals in Germany.
The Sea Dogs selected Schutz 41st overall after trading up from the 60th position with the Moncton Wildcats. In return, the Wildcats received a sixth round draft choice from Saint John. The Sea Dogs acquired that pick several weeks ago in a trade with Rouyn-Noranda that involved Saint John native Mike Neil.
Bob "Tipper" LeBlanc, general manager of the Sea Dogs, said he and head coach Christian La Rue were impressed with Schutz performance at the Under 18 Worlds, describing him as "the best German player on the ice.
"We liked his tenacity, his aggressiveness and work ethic. We feel we have a kid who can really play," said LeBlanc. "He's an in-your-face player who we honestly didn't expect would be available as the 60th pick."
The Sea Dogs open their training camp at Harbour Station on August 12. Their inaugural season opener will occur September 16 when the Sea Dogs host the St. John's Fog Devils.
