December 12, 2009 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
Two goals by Stephen Genua and a fantastic performance by Jaroslav Janus keyed the Erie Otters (14-14-4-1) to a 3-2 Ontario Hockey League victory over the Sarnia Sting at RBC Centre Saturday night.
Genua put the Otters on the board 4:49 into the contest with a blistering shot from the left point that went through the glove side of Adam Courchaine. Defensemen Tyler Hostetter and Paul Cianfrini picked up the assists.
Genua scored his second goal of the game at 10:36 after taking a pretty pass from Jeremy Gottzmann and switching to the forehand to beat Courchaine on the stick side for Genua's first multi-goal game of his career.
The Sting went on the scoreboard 1:46 into the second after video review confirmed a goal for Jesse Stoughton. The Sting also received a power play after a late hit by Mike Cazzola, but it was the Otters who did the damage as Shawn Szydlowski scored his second shorthanded goal of the season on a breakaway at 2:51.
A wacky carom off the corner boards resulted in a lucky break for the Sting, as the break landed in front of Janus, who had no time to react as Tyler Peters put it between the legs of Janus at 11:17 of the second/
The third period featured a barrage of shots towards Janus by the Sting, who outshot the Otters 12-3, but Janus can came big throughout the final 20 minutes to maintain the Otters lead and preserve the victory, earning first star honors with a 29-save performance.
The Otters return home for a Friday night contest against the Sudbury Wolves, start time at 7:00 p.m. It will be the First Annual Ladies Night, sponsored by Envy Salon and Spa. The Ladies Expo will take place at the Tullio Arena suites from 6:00 p.m. until the second intermission, featuring vendors selling jewelry, purses, photos and much more for your last-minute Christmas shopping. Envy will also provide select services for a fee during the game. Purchase tickets at the Erie Civic Center box office, through Ticketmaster, or by calling 452-4857.
