October 8, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Oshawa, Ontario - Scott Laughton was the hero in Oshawa on Monday as the Generals beat Belleville 4-3 in an overtime thriller at the General Motors Centre. Boone Jenner extended his point streak to 7 games while the Generals extended their win streak to 5 before a Thanksgiving crowd of 3,854. With the win, the league-leading Generals remain perfect at the General Motors Centre where they haven't lost all season.
Both sides were held off the scoreboard in a first period that saw Belleville outshoot Oshawa, 8-6.
The Generals earned 2 power plays within the first 4 minutes of the game, but couldn't find a way to solve Bruins' prospect, Malcolm Subban, who made a nice toe save on a point shot from Scott Laughton.
Oshawa goaltender, Daniel Altshuller, had a strong opening twenty, making a solid kick save on Bulls' winger Sergey Kuptsov who fired from the slot.
In the second, Altshuller's quick glove hand kept Oshawa in the game. Still, the Bulls grabbed the lead at 12:53 when Belleville captain, Brendan Gaunce, potted his 2nd goal of the season, cruising in late, finding a pass from behind the net, and roofing it home.
Oshawa's best scoring chance came early when Michael Dal Colle stole the puck on the half boards and rattled a shot off the crossbar. Physical intensity picked up towards the end of the frame, setting the stage for an intriguing final twenty.
The Generals roared into the third, tying it at 1 just 20 seconds in. OHL leading scorer, Boone Jenner, surprised Subban, and rocketed a slap shot that caught the far side corner of the net. With the goal, Oshawa's captain extended his point streak to 7 games.
Reinvigorated, the Generals took a 2-1 lead at 13:45. This time, it was Oshawa's leading point producing defenceman, Matt Petgrave, beating Subban with a shot through traffic.
Belleville tied the game less than a minute later when Austen Brassard cashed in from the slot.
The end to end action continued, and at 18:13, Laughton won a battle behind Belleville's goal and found Dal Colle on Subban's doorstep. The Generals' rookie went top shelf, giving Oshawa a 3-2 lead with less than 2 minutes to play.
The drama intensified when Garrett Hooey blasted a slap shot past Altshuller's glove hand with 24 seconds left on the clock. Tied at 3, Laughton put the game's fate to bed at 2:16 of the extra frame. Picking up the puck just inside the blue line, Laughton put Oshawa on top for good, ripping a slap shot that beat Subban far side, making the Generals winners, 4-3.
Shots finished tied at 27.
Boone Jenner and Michael Dal Colle were the game's first and second star selections.
Daniel Altshuller made 24 saves in his 6th win of the season.
The Generals next home game is this Friday October 12th vs. the Barrie Colts at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa. Puck drops at 7:35 PM. Come on out and cheer on a Gens team that hasn't lost on home ice!
