Generals Win Goal-Fest in Peterborough

Peterborough, Ontario - November 8th, 2011 - The Generals stormed into the Lift-Lock-City Tuesday night intent to take two important points away from their East Division rivals. With new bench boss Gary Agnew at the helm, they didn't disappoint, beating the Petes 7-4 before a crowd of 2,346 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. Daniel Maggio scored twice, Lucas Lessio notched his team leading 11th goal and Kevin Bailie made 51 saves in the win! Oshawa moves to 3-0 vs. Peterborough on the season.
Oshawa flew out of the gate looking hungry and playing at a frantic pace. Their energy and determination saw them win virtually every one-on-one battle, and it didn't take long for their blood, sweat and tears to show on the scoreboard. Emerson Clark tallied Oshawa's first, a beautiful backhand goal on a break orchestrated by line-mate, Scott Laughton.
Up 1-0, the Gens put the pedal to the metal. Playing run-and-gun 4-on-4 hockey, Nicklas Jensen walked in from the half boards, patiently deked around the lone defender and buried the puck past Peterborough net-minder, Andrew D'Agostini. The Petes goaltender's Goals Against Average took an additional beating at 18:03 when Lucas Lessio cruised down the left wing undetected and fired home his team leading 11th goal, a rebound short-side.
Oshawa defenseman, Daniel Maggio, completed the first period romp by firing a seeing-eye-wrist-shot through traffic that the Petes goalie didn't ever appear to see. Oshawa goaltender, Kevin Bailie, was a stabilizing presence in the back end stopping all 13 shots that he faced. At the end of 1, Oshawa was dominating 4-0.
In the second period, Peterborough heavily outshot Oshawa as the Generals were caught flat-footed trying to protect the lead. The Petes made a goaltending change with Mike Morrison coming on to replace D'Agostini. Morrison brought calm to the chaos by shutting the Generals down in the middle frame, and miraculously, 2 Petes goals got Peterborough back into the game.
First, Slater Koekkoek used the backboards to feed Alan Quine who whipped the puck past Bailie from the top of the crease. Then, at 16:44, the Petes power play delivered: Matt Puempel slipped the puck by Oshawa's goaltender along the ice making it a 4-2 game. By the end of the period, Peterborough was outshooting Oshawa 38-30 and it was a game again!
In the final frame, Brian Hughes picked an excellent time to score his first goal of the season finding the twine at 5:36. Hughes outworked the Petes defence and backhanded his own rebound past Morrison giving Oshawa a 5-2 cushion.
Shockingly, Oshawa's insurance didn't last long: the Petes got goals from Joey West and their Captain, Austin Watson, to pull them to within 1.
With the score 5-4, Maggio responded by scoring his second of the night, a chip shot that had just enough on it to beat Morrison. Bailie held down the fort the rest of the way making a number of spectacular saves including a stop on Matt Puempel that was part of a 4-on-1 rush. An Oshawa empty-netter put the game to rest. Maggio and Bailie picked up the first and third star selections in the 7-4 win.
The teams combined for a total of 95 shots in the game!
The Generals continue their road trip on Remembrance Day, this Friday November 11th in Kingston vs. the Frontenacs. Start time is 7:30 PM and the game can be seen live on Rogers TV Durham.
Oshawa plays their first of two weekend home games this Saturday November 12th against the Ottawa 67's at the General Motors Centre. Puck drops at 7:05 PM.
On Sunday November 13th, the Generals take on the Belleville Bulls on home ice. Game time is 6:05 PM.
