Generals Win Fourth Straight

The Generals took to home ice tonight for a tilt against the Peterborough Petes for Rivalry Night! After extending their winning streak to three straight games with a 4-1 win over the Barrie Colts on Sunday, the Gens headed into the contest with a 33-18-3-0 record on the season. Looking to make it four victories in a row, the Gens aimed to take down their rival in the final game of the season series with the Petes.
1st Period:
The Gens opened the game with the first dangerous scoring chance when Anthony Salinitri cut in towards the front of the Petes net and got a shot in close that was saved by Peterborough goaltender Hunter Jones. Building off the chance, the Gens opened the scoring seven minutes into the period when Allan McShane entered the Petes zone with speed and passed the puck off to Ty Tullio who sniped it home. Oshawa's offense wasn't done there, as less than a minute later the Gens added to their lead when a Serron Noel pass was redirected into the net to put the game at 2-0. However, the Petes were quick to answer back as they potted their first goal shortly after to bring them back within one of Oshawa. Battling right back, the Gens regained their two-goal lead with seven minutes left in the first when Nando Eggenberger wrapped the back around the net to beat Jones for the 3-1 goal. Shortly after the goal, the Petes were called for goaltender interference to give the Gens the first powerplay of the game. While Oshawa went unsuccessful on the man-advantage, they held onto their lead for the rest of the period and headed into the intermission up 3-1 on the scoreboard and outshooting the Petes 17-3.
2nd Period:
The Gens opened the second period by keeping up their dominant play and spending the majority of time in Peterborough's end. Just over six minutes into the period, Oshawa took their first penalty of the game to put them on the penalty kill. With strong defensive play, the Gens managed to kill off the infraction and keep their two-goal lead. Back at even strength, Oshawa continued to own the shot clock, outshooting the Petes 29-9 just after the halfway mark of the period. However, despite the shot totals, the Petes were able to pot their second of the game off a rebound in front of Oshawa's net to bring them back within one at 3-2. With only a few minutes left in the second, the Gens got called for a high-sticking penalty, but were able to kill it off with the help of some big stops from Oshawa goaltender Kyle Keyser. Finishing off the period by defending against the Petes, the Gens stayed up by one to start the game's final frame with a 3-2 lead.
3rd Period:
The period began with a close call for the Gens, as Keyser came out of his net to play the puck but had it picked off by a Pete who missed the empty net. After the play, Peterborough was called for a cross-checking penalty to put the Gens on a powerplay. Oshawa got a few good looks on net but weren't able to beat the Petes with the man-advantage. At the halfway mark of the third, Peterborough found the tying goal off a perfect shot by Nick Robertson that knotted things at 3-3. With six minutes left in the period, the Petes took a penalty for checking from behind to put the Gens up a man. Capitalizing on the powerplay, Serron Noel passed the puck into the slot to Allan McShane who ripped a shot past Jones to put the Gens up by one late in the third. Oshawa took a penalty of their own with only three minutes left in the game, setting them up for a huge penalty kill. With the Petes pulling their goalie during the Gens penalty to give them a 6-on-4, Oshawa was able to break out of their end with Brett Neumann carrying the puck into the Petes zone and burying the empty net to put the Gens up 5-3. Adding one more empty net goal by Anthony Salinitri as he came out of the box, the Gens secured a 6-3 win over the rival Petes at home.
After picking up their fourth straight win tonight, the Gens will look to take their momentum on the road to the States when the team travels to Flint and Saginaw this weekend. When they return from the road, Oshawa will take on the Sudbury Wolves at the Tribute Communities Centre on Family Day Monday at 2:05pm!
