FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals of the International Hockey League continue to enjoy their best hockey of the season posting a 2-0-0-1 record for last week's action earning a 5 of a possible 6 points. Here is a recap of last week's games.
Thursday, January 22, 2009 -- Bloomington 3 @ Flint 4 (Shootout) - The Flint Generals get two goals and the shootout game winning goal from defenseman Kyle Deck as the Generals defeat the Bloomington Prairie Thunder 4-3 in a shootout in front of 1,337 at Perani Arena on Thursday night.
Bloomington jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by defenseman John Neal (2) at 12:24 and center Marty Standish (6) at 14:09. The Generals came back to tie it at 2-2 in the second period as right wing John DiPace (21) tallied at 8:34 and Deck (12) scored on the power play at 10:17 to wrap up second period scoring, deadlocked heading in to the third period.
Flint claimed the 3-2 lead as Deck (13) rifled a shot from the point that beat Prairie Thunder goaltender Ryan Ludzik at 5:49. Bloomington would tie it on a goal by Jon Booras (20) at 6:55 of the third period knotting the game at 3-3.
It would stay that way through the end of regulation and overtime, heading in to the shootout as the Generals outscored Bloomington 3-2 in the 4th round to wrap up the victory. Flint had to fight from behind twice in the shootout as A.J. Bozoian and Steve Rymsha scored on the second and third shots respectively. Bloomington's Jon Booris (1st shot) and Jan Jas (3rd shot) scored in the shootout. Deck sealed the victory with the shootout goal on the Generals 4th shot.
Friday, January 23, 2009 - Port Huron 3 @ Flint 4 (Overtime) - The Flint Generals continue their outstanding defensive play and the hard work continues to pay off in a thrilling 4-3 overtime, come-from behind victory over the Port Huron Icehawks in front of 2,594 at Perani Arena on Friday night. This was a classic defensive battle and a well played contest from the opening faceoff.
The Generals opened the scoring in the first period when left wing Steve Rymsha (27) scored at 2:11 for the 1-0 lead. The Icehawks tied it when Jamie Carroll (15) connected on a pass from behind the net from Nick Lindberg for a 1-1 score at the end of the first period.
Flint regained the lead in the second period as Rob Voltera (4) took connected on a feed from Zach Pearson at 13:07 for a 2-1 advantage. Port Huron bounced right back as defenseman Robert Cowan (2) scored from the point on a screen shot beating goaltender Chad Alban at 15:15 for a 2-2 score heading into the third period.
The third period was a classic defensive battle when Port Huron's Derek Patrusso (8) scored as Alban was screened on the play to put the Generals in a 3-2 deficit at the 9:35 mark. It would stay that way until Generals right winger Zach Pearson (5) tied it with an outstanding effort while sliding on his stomach in one sweeping motion, snapping a shot past Icehawks goaltender Larry Sterling at 16:23 for a 3-3 score.
The Generals wrapped it up in overtime while applying some early pressure when defenseman Ryan Jorde (2) came into the zone fairly deep and snapped a shot that beat Sterling short side to give the Generals a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory over Port Huron. Goaltender Chad Alban stopped 34 of 37 shots for his 9th victory of the season.
Sunday, January 25, 2009 - Flint 2 @ Kalamazoo 3 (Shootout) - Kalamazoo opened the scoring in the first period when center Tommy Lange (15) scored on a break away at 12:53 of the first period for the 1-0 lead.Â
The Generals bounced back with 2 unanswered second period goals when left wing Steve Rymsha (28) scored at 11:58 to tie the game at 1-1.Â
The Generals took the lead when veteran forward Rob Voltera (5) took a pass from defenseman Kyle Deck, moved into the slot from the half-wall and sent a back-hander past WIngs's goaltender Jason Tapp at 19:33 for the 2-1 lead.
It would stay that way until Kalamazoo pulled Tapp for the extra attacker in the waining moments of third period regulation time when defenseman Rod Aldoff (7) scored with only 12 seconds remaining to tie the game at 2-2 forcing overtime and evenutally the shootout.Â
Kalamazoo outscored the Generals 1-0 in the shootout that went for 6 rounds until forward Rick Cleaver scored the game-deciding goal. Generals goaltender Chad Alban (9-11-1-4)Â stopped 33 of 35 shots for the all-important point in the standings.
Goaltender of the Week Nomination - Chad Alban is our nominee for the Southern Sports Supply/UHL Goaltender of the Week ending January 25, 2009. Alban posted a record of 2-0-0-1 for the week allowing only 8 goals in 107 shots. He ended the week with a 92.5 save percentage.
Rookie of the Week Nomination - Defenseman Kyle Deck is our nominee for the Aquafina/IHL Rookie of the Week ending January 25, 2009. Deck had another tremendous week posting 2 goals, 2 assists for 4 points and was +3. He scored two goals and the shootout deciding goal in the victory over Bloomington on Thursday night.
Player of the Week Nomination - Center Greg Bullock is our nominee for the Pepsi/UHL Player of the Week ending January 25, 2009. Bullock had 5 assists during the week including a 3 assist night against the Bloomington Prairie Thunder last Thursday night.
