Shootout Sunday

ROCHESTER, MI--- A wild week of overtime and shootouts was capped off Sunday with all three games ending in a shootout. Sunday evening, Kalamazoo went on to beat Flint 3-2, Fort Wayne defeated Bloomington 4-3 and Muskegon came out victorious over Port Huron 3-2, all in a shootout. Six out of the 10 games played this week in the IHL ended with fans getting extra hockey. Five of those six ended in a shootout, while one ended in overtime. With the K-Wings shootout win over Flint Sunday, Kalamazoo remains only unbeaten team in both overtime and the shootout with an 8-0 record.

Port Huron rookie goaltender Ryan Mior made his IHL debut Saturday against Kalamazoo, with a tie for first place on the line between the Icehawks and K-Wings. Mior shut out the K-Wings, turning away all 18 shots he faced. The 18 shots by Kalamazoo is a season low for the K-wings. Jamie Carroll tipped in a power play goal with 8:12 left in the game to help the Icehawks earn a 1-0 victory over Kalamazoo. Mior becomes the sixth goaltender to earn a shutout this season and recorded the seventh overall shutout in the IHL. He also is the second rookie goaltender to earn a shutout in his IHL debut next to Fort Wayne's Tim Haun (December 12th vs. Bloomington).

Fort Wayne center Mathieu Curadeau returned to the Komets line-up Friday after his second stint in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Norfolk Admirals. Curadeau's return helped spark the Komets to earn five out of six possible points this past week. The Komets exploded for 10 goals Saturday night in Muskegon, one shy of the IHL team game-high of 11, set by the Komets back on October 18th when they defeated the Generals 11-3. Curadeau has picked up where he left off after his second call-up, extending his goal streak (6 goals) and point streak, notching in eight points (6 goals, 2 assists).

Bloomington PrairieThunder - (1-0-0-2) - Forward Jon Booras needs just six more points to surpass his career-high of 57, which he scored last season in 74 games. He has already put up more assists (31) than he did last season (28) and needs just nine more goals to pass last year's total of 29. Jan Jas and Henry Kuster have combined for 21 points (8 goals, 13 assists) in the eight games they have played together with the PrairieThunder. Center Marty Standish has scored at least one point in 19 of the 27 games he has played with Bloomington. The PrairieThunder is 2-0-0-2 in their last four games, the longest unbeaten streak for the team this season. Rookies Bill Bagron and Mike Kusy picked up their first points as a PrairieThunder when both had assists on Brent Clarke's goal Sunday against Fort Wayne.

Flint Generals - (2-0-0-1) - Flint defenseman Ryan Jorde (overtime 1/23) and Kyle Deck (shootout 1/22) scored the game winning goals this week. Flint is 3-0-1-2 in their last six games. Flint has played in seven straight one-goal games with a record of 3-1-1-2 dating back to January 10th. The last time the Generals allowed more than four goals in a game was back on January 2nd in a 7-6 shootout win over the Fort Wayne Komets. Flint has played in four consecutive OT games (2-0-0-2) dating back to January 17th, and five of the last six games (3-0-1-2). The last regulation loss for Flint was on January 10th (4-3 loss against Port Huron). Goaltender Chad Alban's last regulation loss was January 3rd at Port Huron (7-3). Steve Rymsha continues to lead the IHL in goals scored (28).

Fort Wayne Komets - (2-0-0-1) - The Komets gained more ground on first-place Port Huron in the race for the top of the IHL earning five of a possible six points in three games played to improve to 22-14-1-5 for 50 points and second place, three points behind the leading Icehawks. First time in 47 years: Saturday night at Muskegon, Komet winger Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn dished five assists in the Komet's 10-3 win over the Lumberjacks. It was the first time in 47 years a Komet player passed five assists in a road game. Reggie Primeau accomplished it last on March 18, 1962 at Indianapolis, when he became the only player in Fort Wayne franchise history to record six assists in a road game. Also, Primeau's grandson, forward Ryan Potts, scored his first pro points (two assists) for the Komets in the 10-3 win at Muskegon Saturday. Komet Streaks: Goaltender Nick Boucher is unbeaten (in regulation) five straight (3-0-0-2). Center Mathieu Curadeau has an IHL high six-game goal and point scoring streak (6 goals, 2 assists). Winger Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn is riding a three-game goal and point streak (4 goals, 5 assists). The Komets are unbeaten in six straight games (4-0-0-2) and have a road unbeaten streak of four games (3-0-0-1).

Kalamazoo Wings - (2-1-0-0) - Rod Aldoff is one goal shy of 100 in his career. Jason Robinson played in his 600th career game on 01/25 versus Flint. Joel Martin played in his 200th career game on 01/24/ against Port Huron. Martin is tied with Fort Wayne's Nick Boucher for top GAA in the IHL at 2.75. Martin also boasts the top save percentage at .919. Kalamazoo, who is 4-5-0-0 in their last nine games, has not won in regulation since January 3rd. All four victories have come in either overtime or a shootout. Kalamazoo has scored seven goals this season with less than one minute to play in the third period, with four of the goals forcing the score to be tied. The K-Wings have won all four of those games. Kalamazoo will host the first-ever McDonald's Golden Ice Game this Saturday versus Bloomington. Kalamazoo will play the last two legs of a three-game home stand this weekend. The K-Wings, who will play five of their next six games at Wings Stadium hold the best home record in the league at 13-3-0-0. Kalamazoo is now 4-1 following a shutout loss, with three of the victories coming against Flint. The K-Wings are 10-0-0-0 when leading at home after the first period and 9-0-0-0 when they lead at Wings Stadium after two periods.

Muskegon Lumberjacks - (1-2-0-0) - The Muskegon power play continues to product in a prolific fashion. Having delivered a power play goal in 10 of their last 12 games, the Lumberjacks are 20 for 51 in that span for a proficiency rating of a dynamic 39.2%. The Lumberjacks have reached the halfway mark of their 76 game schedule with a 23-12-3-1 record (48 points). The Lumberjacks have a winning record against every team in the IHL so far this season: Bloomington 6-3-0-0, Flint 3-1-1-0, Fort Wayne 5-4-0-0, Kalamazoo 4-2-1-0 and Port Huron 4-2-1-1. When a Lumberjack player scores a hat trick this season, Muskegon has a perfect 6-0-0-0 record. Through his first 37 games of the season, Todd Robinson has engineered an amazing 19 multiple point games. Darryl McArthur's 11 power play assists tie him for third most in the IHL among defensemen.

Port Huron Icehawks - (1-0-1-1) - The Icehawks picked up four of six possible points last weekend and remain in first place, three points ahead of Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne, who are tied for second. Port Huron has games in hand on Kalamazoo (2), Muskegon (4) and Bloomington (3), but holds the second highest winning percentage in the league at .631. Muskegon is just a bit higher at .632.

The Icehawks have seen their games go into extra sessions four times in January and six times overall this season. They are 2-1 in shootouts this season and 1-2 in overtime games. Jamie Carroll is riding a three game goal streak after scoring in all three games played last weekend. Carroll currently leads the Icehawks in points and is ranked sixth in the league in scoring with 48 points (17g, 31a). Several Icehawks lead the league in various categories. Jamie Carroll leads in shots on goal (176), Tab Lardner and Jamie Lovell both lead for game winning goals (5), and Derek Merlini is tied with Kalamazoo's Mark Nebus for first place in plus/minus (+18). The Icehawks continue to be flawless when leading after the second period this season. They are 17-0 when they carry a lead into the third period. The Icehawks continue to lead the league on both the power play (22.4%) and the penalty kill (86.1%) on the road.
