Generals Weekly Report

February 22, 2010 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2) - Flint Generals News Release

The week of February 15th was scheduled to see four Generals games beginning Tuesday; however the Generals, PrairieThunder and the IHL postponed the game for a later date. The rescheduled date will be announced within the next couple of days.

Action picks back up Friday, February 19 when Dayton visits Perani for the return of Facebook Fridays. Dayton holds the upper hand in the season series thus far with a record of 6-3-0-1 over the Generals. The last meeting between the Gems and the Gens went to the latter of the two, giving them only their 3rd road win.

Saturday the G-Men hit the road again as they head to Muskegon to visit the top notch 'Jacks. The Gens won the last contest with the 'Jacks 4-2 at Perani, their last visit to L.C. Walker Arena however did not go as well, falling 8-0. This trip, fans and players alike have something positive to hold on to that they hadn't for much of the season, and that is road wins. Since January 16th the Generals have gone 6-4-1-0 with 4 of those 6 wins coming on the road. Up until then, the boys from Flint had a total of 2 road wins all season. One of those road wins included an upset of the Port Huron IceHawks who are 18-6 at McMorran Arena. Despite the point disparity between the Gens and the 'Jacks, Flint's record in the season series is 3-3-0-1.

Muskegon will follow the Generals back to Perani for a Sunday afternoon matchup. Given the series record and the Gens fight to finish strong and make their way into the playoffs, these two games against the top team in the league could be very important.

Looking Back: Week eighteen went pretty well for the Generals who ended the weekend 2-1-0-0 with all three games coming against the second place IceHawks (3-7-0-0 in their last ten games).

Friday night the teams kicked off their three game mini-series at McMorran Arena. The Gens struck first and never looked back. Rob Nolan stopped 26 of 27 shots faced while Port Huron's Larry Sterling stopped 33 of the 36 pucks fired at him.

Nolan got the nod again for round two in Flint Saturday night and once again was dominant in net, casting aside 35 of 36 shots. For the second straight night and third straight game against the 'Hawks, the Gens came away cleanly with two points. His two game performance of stopping 61 of 63 shots earned him his third IHL Goaltender of the Week award.

Sunday the teams returned to Port Huron. With a 2-1 lead at the halfway mark of the third period, the Gens looked poised to sweep. But the home team rallied, tying the game then taking the lead and holding on for the 3-2 win.

The Invasion Continues: Monday Steve Silver, Matt Moffat and John Mori paid a visit to a local independent living retirement community.

Thursday, Generals staff and players will be participating in the Lacure Elementary Book Distribution. Staff will be on hand from 9am-1pm then players will be contributing from 1PM - 3PM. That evening, five players will be taking part in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowling Challenge from 5PM - 6PM.

Next week the players hit the schools once again, paying a visit to Myers Elementary Monday the 22nd from 1:30-3PM (the visit was rescheduled due to last week's snow day). With two Brighton alumni, players will head down US 23 to Brighton on Tuesday to visit Hawkins Elementary from 2:30-4PM. They will then head back to Genesee County to visit Atherton High School on Thursday.
