Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSON, Tenn. - The Jacksonville Suns managed just four hits while the Jackson Generals hit a pair of home runs in the Suns' 9-1 series opening loss at the BallPark in Jackson.
The Generals took an early lead over the visiting Suns on James Jones' bases loaded, three-run double in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Jackson starter Taijuan Walker (3-2) worked six innings of one-run ball, surrendering just three hits and striking out seven.
Jacksonville, playing its first game without recently promoted outfielder Marcell Ozuna, scored its only run of the game in the top of the second inning on Danny Black's RBI groundout that pulled the Suns to within two.
It was as close as they would get, however. With Suns starter Sam Dyson (0-2) still on the mound, the Generals added a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout of their own from Jack Marder, and another on Julio Morban's run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth. Dyson would finish with five innings pitched, five runs allowed (four earned) and one strikeout.
Up 5-1, the Generals blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth against Suns reliever Mike Ojala. With two runners on, John Hicks hit a three-run home run to give Jackson a seven-run lead. The very next batter, Morban, blasted the second of back-to-back homers with a solo shot to right field, putting the Generals up by the final score of 9-1.
Jake Marisnick, starting in center field in his Jacksonville Suns debut, finished 0-for-4. Christian Yelich and Derek Dietrich finished with Jacksonville's only extra bases hits of the night, a triple for Yelich and a double for Dietrich.
The Suns will attempt to earn their first win of the five-game series in Jackson on Thursday in game two behind right-handed starter Jay Jackson (0-0, 0.00 ERA in one start). The Generals are scheduled to start righty Brett Shankin (1-0, 3.50 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 p.m. ET.
Suns fans can listen to Thursday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM, or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:50 p.m. with the UF and Shands Suns Pre-Game Show.
