Jackson Generals News Release
MOBILE, ALA. - For the second night in a row, the Jackson Generals struck first against the Mobile BayBears, and the early surge helped them to an eventual 6-4 victory in ten innings at Hank Aaron Stadium on Saturday. The Generals (34-28) had great support on the hill from starter Joel Payamps, as well as a multi-homer game from 2018 Southern League All Star and left fielder Jamie Westbrook. The game went ten innings after Mobile tied the score in the bottom of the ninth, but the BayBears (34-27) were unable to regain the lead after a Westbrook dinger in the tenth. The win kept Jackson in a tie for first place with Chattanooga in the Southern League's North Division.
Jamie Westbrook kicked off the scoring for the Generals, batting in Kevin Medrano with a first-inning single to left. The BayBears would tie it up in the second with a home run from Michael Barash and take the lead in the third on a Riley Unroe RBI groundout. The Generals' bats would go quiet until the seventh inning, when Jose Queliz hit a line drive to right that scored Galli Cribbs, tying the game for a second time at 2-2. In the eighth, Jamie Westbrook would hit his first home run of the night to left field and give the Generals the lead at 3-2. Queliz would reach on a fielding error in the ninth inning that scored Cribbs to make the lead 4-2. However, Mobile's Michael Barash would double in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Brennon Lund and Jose Rojas, bringing the score even at 4-4. Westbrook would come to bat in the 10th with Jose Vinicio standing at second and hit his 11th home run of the season, giving Jackson the lead for good. Westbrook is now tied for the most home runs in the Southern League with 11. The BayBears would go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th to end the game.
Right-hander Joel Payamps was working hard from the first pitch, throwing six strong innings. Payamps (3-2, 3.52 ERA) allowed three hits, two runs and three walks while striking out three of the 21 batters he faced. Daniel Gibson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) would come in for two innings of shutout relief facing six batters, striking out two and giving up one hit. Earning the win for the Generals, right-hander Yoan Lopez (2-4, 4.28 ERA) came in to start the 9th and worked for two innings, holding off the BayBears while facing nine batters, giving up two hits and two runs and striking out four.
The Generals' offense was powered by left fielder Jamie Westbrook, going 3-5 with 4 RBI on the night. Other Generals building towards the win were catcher Jose Queliz, going 2-4 with 2 RBI, and second baseman Domingo Leyba, also going 2-4 with a walk.
