JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp second baseman Isan Diaz has been named the Southern League Player of the Week for June 4-10, announced by the league office on Monday.
Diaz hit safely in all seven games last week, hitting .565 (13-for-23), which was the highest batting average in Double-A baseball and the fourth-highest in all of Minor League Baseball for that time period. During his hitting streak, Diaz drove in seven runs, collected four doubles, drew six walks, stole three bases, and scored five runs. His .667 on-base percentage was the best in Minor League Baseball for the week, and he also led the Southern League with a 1.406 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS).
Also impressive during his season-long seven-game hitting streak was the fact that he recorded four multi-hit games, as well as three multi-RBI games. His batting average has risen from .194 to .240 during this stretch at the plate.
Diaz is in his first season playing at the Double-A level, and overall is hitting .240 with five home runs and 22 runs batted in. He is regarded by MLB.com as the Miami Marlins No. 7 prospect, and he was acquired by the Marlins as part of January's Christian Yelich trade with the Milwaukee Brewers. Diaz, 22, is a native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and was originally selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2nd round of the 2014 draft out of Springfield High School in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Diaz is the fourth Jumbo Shrimp player to earn a weekly Southern League award this season. Jeff Brigham was honored as the league's Pitcher of the Week for April 5-15, Austin Dean was the Southern League Player of the Week for April 16-22, and Cade Gotta was the league's Player of the Week from May 14-20. Dean was also honored as the Southern League Player of the Month for April.
The Jumbo Shrimp continue their series with Biloxi at 7:05 p.m. Monday, when Jacksonville right-hander Kolton Mahoney (3-3) is scheduled to face Shuckers left-hander Kodi Medeiros (4-3). Gates open at 6 p.m. for VyStar Credit Union Charity Begins at Home with Duval Charter Schools, which will raise funds through ticket sales and the Launch-A-Ball promotion. VyStar Credit Union members can get a buy-3-get-1 free ticket special by showing their VyStar credit or debit card at the box office. For Canines and Crustaceans, Bark in the Park presented by Standard Feed and Seed, dogs are welcome at the ballpark, free of charge with a paying human companion. Dog-free seating will be available in Sections 110 and 111. Half-Price Yuengling Monday means 16-oz. Yuengling cans are half-price.
