Oshawa Generals News Release
Tonight's game brought everything you could look for in a Generals vs. Petes matchup - a fight, a hat trick, and a Generals win. Your Generals opened the first round with a 7-2 win over the Petes and look to do the same this Sunday, Mar. 29 on home ice.
Although the Generals got off to a slow start in the first, the Generals came out to dominate through the rest of the period. Tobias Lindberg was the star of the period, scoring a natural hat trick and giving the Generals a two goal lead. It was the Petes who opened the scoring when Josh Maguire put one past Appleby at 4:27. Although originally called as unassisted, Lorentz later picked up an assist on the goal. At 9:45, the Generals retaliated and Tobias Lindberg scored his first playoff goal in the OHL, assisted by Dal Colle and McCarron. Minutes later, Michael McCarron trampled Petes goaltender, Matthew Mancina. The Petes weren't happy and McKinnon instigated a fight. After dropping the gloves, McCarron was given five minutes for fighting and McKinnon left the ice with two minutes for instating, five minutes for fighting, and a 10 minute game misconduct for instigating. With the Generals on a power play, Lindberg scored his second of the game and gave the Generals a 2-1 lead on a goal assisted by Cole Cassels. Less than a minute later, Lindberg did it again and the hats went flying. Cassels again picked up the assist on the goal and the Generals ended the period with a two goal lead over the Petes. The Generals dominated the first, outshooting Peterborough 17-6.
The second period was similar to the first, with the Generals spending a lot of time in Peterborough's end. Matt McCartney narrowed the Generals lead to 3-2 at 3:18 into the second, the goal was unassisted. Less than a minute later however, the Generals put another on the board, this time scored by Hunter Smith and assisted by Carlisle and Mermis. The period featured zero penalties, an unusual occurrence between these rivals. The Generals again outshot the Petes, this time 13-5.
The third frame started with early penalties for each side with McDonald sitting for two for hooking at 0:15 and Mistele called for interference at 2:33. At 5:31, Maguire was called for check to the head and the Generals made the most of the power play. Mitch Vande Sompel made things 5-2, assisted by Cassels and Dal Colle. By 14:03, Michael McCarron gave the Generals a comfortable four goal lead when he put one past Mancina. Lindberg and Dal Colle picked up the assists on his goal. The Generals weren't done there and before the game could end, Joe Manchurek scored the final goal of the game, giving the Generals a 7-2 win over the Petes. His goal came assisted by Pedersen. It was a big opening game for your Generals and Ken Appleby did an outstanding job stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced tonight.
