Spirit Fall to Greyhounds in Game One

The Saginaw Spirit ventured to the Essar Centre to face off against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for the first round of the 2014-15 playoff season on Friday night. The Saginaw Spirit fell to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 5-1 in game one of the playoffs, with Connor Brown recording the lone goal for the visiting Saginaw team.

The Spirit and the Greyhounds recorded a close-matched period, with Sault Ste. Marie recording some timely goals in the first to take a 2-0 lead over Saginaw. Sault Ste. Marie's Justin Bailey opened the playoff game's scoring midway through the first period on a breakaway, unassisted goal at 12:07. The Greyhounds found the back of the net again at 14:18 of the first when Michael Bunting picked up a pass from Jared McCann and Anthony DeAngelo, beat Saginaw's starting goaltender Evan Cormier and took a 2-0 lead over the visiting team. Shots during the first period favored Sault Ste. Marie 12-11.

The second period provided opportunities for the Spirit to cut into the Sault Ste. Marie lead, with Saginaw recording four power play instances in the second. Sault Ste. Marie's Zach Senyshyn made it a 3-0 game at 6:05 of the second, with the assists being credited to Nick Ritchie and Gabe Guertler. It wasn't until the later end of the period when Saginaw's Connor Brown put a stop to the Greyhounds scoring party and netted his first playoff goal of the season on the power play at the 15:25 mark. Artem Artemov and Tye Felhaber assisted the play. The Greyhounds were able to net one more shot before the end of the 2nd period, after Jared McCann recorded the 4th Sault Ste. Marie goal at 17:23 on a short handed occurrence. Bryan Moore was credited with the lone assist on the play. Shots on goal in the second period read 13-10, in favor of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

The Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds were able to net one last goal to end the scoring on the night before the final buzzer sounded at the Essar Centre. Just 2:09 into the third period Sault Ste. Marie's Bryan Moore slipped the puck past Evan Cormier to make it a 5-1 Greyhound lead over the Spirit. Nick Ritchie recorded the lone assist on the play. The final score of game one read Sault Ste. Marie 5, Saginaw 1, with the Greyhounds leading final shots on goal 34-26.

The Spirit will continue their time at the Essar Centre on Saturday, March 28th to face off against the Greyhounds for game two of the playoffs. That game is scheduled to begin at 7:07 p.m. These games can be heard on the flagship station of the Saginaw Spirit FM Talk and Sports WSGW 100.5. Home games one and two of the series will go at the Dow Event Center on Tuesday, March 31st and Thursday, April 2nd at 7:11 p.m. There will also be $2 slices of Jet Pizza, Pepsi and beer in the Bud Light Blue Line Club from 5:30-7:30 p.m. both Tuesday and Thursday.
