Jackson Generals News Release
TODAY'S GAME: For the 4th consecutive series, the Generals will play a rubber game tonight at 7:05 against the Barons. Jackson will look for their second straight series win. The Generals will face off against LHP Justin Edwards for the 2nd time this season, (0-0, 3.60 ERA). The Generals are 5-5 in their last 10 games and 3-2 in the last five.
JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - Despite being out-hit 13-8, the Generals defeated the Birmingham Barons Monday night at Regions Park, 6-4. The Barons stranded 10 runners on base and were 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. The Jackson win evened the series at 2-2, forcing the fourth straight rubber game of a series for Jackson. Rich Poythress collected two hits for the third straight day, finishing 2-for-4, with a double and RBI. Luis Jimenez was 2-for-3, scoring a run and driving in a run. Four Barons had two hits and Jose Martinez led the way for Birmingham's 13-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with a run. Stephen Hensley (3-6) won his second straight start and pitched 5 2/3 innings Monday night, allowing three runs and eight hits. Hensley struck out a season high six batters and walked two. Stephen Pryor was brilliant again at the back end, pitching two scoreless frames to earn his second Double-A save, striking out three. Birmingham starter, Terry Doyle (3-5) took the loss and surrendered five runs on seven hits, in five innings.
TRIUNFEL TO TRIPLE-A: Today SS Carlos Triunfel was promoted to Triple-A Tacoma and SS Gabriel Noriega was activated from A+ High Desert. Triunfel has battled injuries in his 3 seasons in Jackson, but played in 241 games for the Generals or Diamond Jaxx since 2009. Carlos was batting .281, with 6 home runs and 35 RBI in 105 games this season, mostly at SS (5 games at 2B). Noriega had hit safely in 14 of the last 17 games with High Desert batting .381 (24x63) with 15 runs scored, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 11 RBI.
TODAY'S STARTER: RHP Andrew Carraway starts the rubber game of the series tonight in Birmingham. This will be Andrew's 2nd start and 3rd game against the Barons (1-0, 5.19 ERA). Carraway ranks 5th in the SL in ERA at 3.41, 3rd in Opp. AVG at .227 and 2nd in WHIP at 1.05. Carraway leads the Generals in innings, strikeouts and starts.
THE JACKSON MARINERS?: The Mariners current 25-man roster includes 11 rookies: Dustin Ackley, Kyle Seager, Blake Beavan, Dan Cortes, Josh Lueke, Michael Pineda and Tom Wilhelmsen each played in Jackson in either 2010 or 2011. Seager and Wilhelmsen are the only two that have worn the Jackson Generals jersey.
K-PAX PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Today, the Southern League announced that Generals LHP James Paxton has been named the Southern League Pitcher of the Week. This marks the first time this season that a Generals player has earned a Hitter or Pitcher of the Week honor. Paxton struck out 10 on Saturday against Birmingham, allowing just two hits in 6 2/3 shutout innings. Paxton's 0.00 ERA for the week lowered his overall ERA to a skimpy 1.97.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1946 - All Major League baseball games (four in the American League and four in the National League) are played at night for the first time in Major League history. 1988 - The Chicago Cubs won the first official night game at Wrigley Field by beating the New York Mets 6-4.
