JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (22-23, 59-56) finished a ten-game homestand with an 8-4 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts (26-18, 61-53) at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Tuesday afternoon.
Jacksonville starter Dallas Trahern earned the victory (5-3) after a strong performance on the mound and at the plate. Trahern tossed six innings while giving up two earned runs on six hits, and he also hit a two-RBI double to cap a six-run bottom of the first as Jacksonville took a 6-0 lead against Chattanooga starter Allen Webster (4-2), who took the loss.
Jacksonville's rally in the first began with a Paul Gran RBI double to score Kevin Mattison. Luke Montz hit his twentieth home run of the season, a two-run blast to left that put Jacksonville ahead 3-0 before a Chris Gutierrez RBI single put the score at 4-0. Trahern drove home Jeremy Synan and Gutierrez on a sharp double to left field to end the scoring, giving Jacksonville a 6-0 lead.
After Travis Denker hit a solo home run in the top of the second for the Lookouts, Jacksonville got the lead back to six in the bottom of the second with Montz driving home his third run of the ballgame on an RBI single to put the score at 7-1. Chattanooga chipped away at the lead with a run in the third before two runs scored in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-4.
The Suns added their final run in the bottom of the sixth, as Jake Smolinski drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Suns an 8-4 lead, which would be the final score.
After Kris Harvey worked a scoreless seventh, the game was delayed by nearly an hour and a half due to rain. After play resumed, Jeff Allison threw a scoreless eighth before Chris Hatcher closed the game in the ninth without allowing any Lookout runs.
The Suns went 6-4 in the homestand against Montgomery and Chattanooga, and now ten home games remain in the 2011 season, with the next home series from Aug. 16-20 against the Mobile BayBears.
The Suns will bus to Tennessee to start a five-game series against the Tennessee Smokies on Wednesday night at Smokies Park. Right-handed pitcher Joey O'Gara (6-7, 4.60 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville while left-hander Brooks Raley (6-8, 4.29 ERA) will pitch for Tennessee. Wednesday's game will start at 7:15 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the contest beginning at 7 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
