Oshawa Generals News Release

Oshawa, Ontario - The Oshawa Generals announced today that General Manager Chris DePiero, Head Coach Gary Agnew, and Assistant Head Coach and Assistant General Manager Joe Cirella will be moving on from the organization.

The Oshawa Generals organization is grateful for their dedication and years of service to the team. Whether with the team for a few months like Agnew or six years like DePiero, their time with the team has been significant and their work greatly appreciated.

Chris DePiero first joined the Generals in 2006 when he served as an Associate Coach under Brad Selwood. He became Head Coach in the 2007-2008 season and saw the team to the third round of the playoffs. DePiero spent the next two years helping the Generals through a rebuilding phase and returned to post-season action for the 2011 and 2012 playoffs. DePiero became General Manager on a full time basis during the 2011-2012 season as Gary Agnew was brought on as head coach.

Gary Agnew joined the Generals in November of 2011 and helped the team to push their way back into the playoffs. Agnew came to the Generals with a wealth of experience, including 10 years in the Ontario Hockey League, six years in the American Hockey League, and four years as an Assistant Coach in the National Hockey League. Under his leadership, the Generals pushed a tremendously challenging series with the Niagara IceDogs to 6 games before being eliminated from the 2012 OHL playoffs.

Joe Cirella became an Assistant Coach with the Oshawa Generals for the 1998-1999 season and served for five years. Leaving after the 2003-2004 season, Cirella returned in 2010. His commitment to the team stretches beyond his coaching though. Cirella played for the Generals from the 1980-1981 season to the 1982-1983 season. Under his leadership as Team Captain, the Generals won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHL Champions and were finalists for the Memorial Cup.

President and Governor Rocco Tullio commented on the matter,

"On behalf of the entire Oshawa Generals organization, I want to extend my sincerest appreciation for the time, dedication, and passion that these gentlemen have given to the club. Their hard work and commitment have helped to define this team. With gratitude and thanks, we wish them all the best in the future."
