Generals in first place tie

GREENSBORO, NC - The Greensboro Generals earned a come from behind 4-3 overtime victory over the South Carolina Stingrays at the Greensboro Coliseum. The dramatic win moved the Generals into a first place tie with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies for the northeast division lead with a 29-11-4 record.

The Stingrays' Ryan Brindley scored the game's first goal at the 6:48 mark, with an assist by Rod Taylor. Taylor's helper put him into the East Coast Hockey League record book with 686 career points, breaking the previous record of 685 by Darryl Noren.

Greensboro (29-11-4) answered to tie the game with a goal by Shane Campbell midway through the first, but South Carolina answered with a goal of its own, making the score 2-1 by period's end.

A power-play goal in the second period gave the Stingrays (24-16-4) a 3-1 lead just 5:09 into the second period. The Generals' Sam Ftorek retaliated with a power-play goal, his team leading 24th of the season, to reduce the deficit to 3-2 entering the final frame.

Greensboro tallied the only goal of the third period with a shot off the stick of Matt Turek at the 3:44 mark. Tenacious defense by the Generals denied South Carolina on three power-play opportunities in the third, helping send the game into overtime. Under a minute into overtime, Pete Gardiner scored the game-winning goal, moving the Generals into a first place tie with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, who lost 5-4 to the Trenton Titans tonight. The Generals have not had a share of the division lead since the second day of the season, on October 12.

The Generals victory tied a season and franchise record with five consecutive wins. The Generals return to the Greensboro Coliseum tomorrow night at 7:00 to face the Roanoke Express. A Generals win will give them a franchise record sixth straight victory and will put them in sole possession of first place for the first time this season.
