Elmira Jackals News Release

Elmira, NY - Despite a valiant effort in the first third of the game, the Elmira Jackals fell to the Flint Generals by a score of 5-2 Saturday night at the First Arena.

The Jackals scored the first two goals of the game to take the lead 2-0, but five unanswered goals by Flint proved to be the insurmountable lead Elmira could not top. Early into the action Flint forward Sean Starke took a hooking penalty setting the Jackals up for their first power play of the evening. Although Elmira could not capitalize on this power play, they did manage to strike first 14:27 into the period, scored by Chris Chaput for his 13th goal of the season. The goal was scored on Elmira's fourth shot of the game, assisted by Jarrett Konkle and Konstantin Kalmikov. Late in the period Generals forward Simon Rizk took a roughing penalty on Elmira's Chris Mann and was sent to the box at 18:13 in the period. Elmira made Rizk and the Generals pay on the third power play of the period with a goal by Jason Sessa; assisted by Kevin Cooper and Eddy Lowe. Elmira ended the period with a penalty on Carl Drakensjo for tripping, while leading Flint in shots 7-6.

The second period was all Flint as the Generals scored all three goals of the period as Elmira was not catching any breaks. Flint scored just over a minute into the period with a power play goal, and soon after each team received hooking penalties. At 12:58 Flint struck again to tie the game at two with a goal from Matt Elich, assisted by Derek Atkinson. Moments later Sean Regan was called for a high stick, followed a minute and a half later by a tripping call on Jackals captain Trevor Burgess to give Flint a 5-on-3 advantage. The Jackals were not able to keep the Generals off the board with 2-men down, as Terry Marchant put Flint on top 3-2 with under five minutes left in the period. That would be the last goal of the period for either team, assisted by J.P. Morin and Leo Thomas.

Elmira was unable to capitalize on two power plays early on in the third period when two Flint players were sent to the penalty box on separate occasions. Elmira's energy seemed to be deflating as the period went on leading to another disputed goal scored by Generals forward Sean Starke. Elmira fans yelled out against the unassisted goal in which the goal judge did not even see the puck go in, only referee Pat Britt saw the puck cross the goal line giving Flint the lead 4-2. With under 2 minutes left in the game Generals Jason Selleke and Chad Cavanagh tied together two well-timed passes to send Leo Thomas on a breakaway into Jackal territory where he threw a deke on Jackal goalie Ryan McIntosh and put the puck in the back of the net to give Flint their fifth unanswered goal of the game. That's the way the game would end for the Jackals, snapping their five game winning streak with their first loss of 2006.

Jason Saal earned the win, stopping 21-of-23 in goal for Flint, while Ryan McIntosh made 20 saves on 25 shots. Flint was 2-for-5 on the power play, Elmira finished 1-for-6.
