LAST GAME: Jackson, Tenn. - The Jackson Generals, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, broke free of their chains with a season-high eight runs scored on Sunday, beating Chattanooga 8-6 at The Ballpark at Jackson. The seven-inning result got the Generals (4-5) a series split with the Lookouts (4-4), due to the second game of Sunday's double-header being postponed due to inclement weather.
The Generals leapt out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, thanks in part to a two-run blast by Ramon Hernandez, marking his first hit and four-bagger at Double-A. Three batters later, Marcus Wilson blooped a single into left field to score Andy Young from second base, snapping a streak of 41.0 innings during which the Generals had not scored a run on anything other than a home run. Jackson didn't settle, though, tagging Chattanooga starter Scott Moss (0-1, 6.75 ERA) with more damage in the fourth on a two-out, two-run single by Jackson pitcher Matt Peacock, his first career hit. The Generals' wrapped up their scoring with a 403-foot home run off the bat of Daulton Varsho in the fifth, a three-run jack that put them ahead 8-1 on Varsho's first Double-A tater. Jackson entered the seventh inning ahead 8-1, but the plot thickened thereafter. The Jackson bullpen faced 11 batters in the seventh inning without the ball ever being put in play, allowing eight walks that scored five Chattanooga runs. Michael Kohn (S, 2) entered midway through the debacle and was able to get all three of the final outs via strikeout.
TODAY'S PITCHING MATCHUP: Right-hander Riley Smith will get his second start for the Generals, grabbing an extra day of rest due to yesterday's double-header altering Jackson's rotation. Smith led the Cal League in strikeouts last year, but he got knocked around for five runs in the series finale at Jacksonville last Monday. He's opposed by Smokies righty Tyson Miller, who sports a flawless 0.00 ERA through one start after leading the Carolina League in strikeouts last year.
WHEN CATCHERS FLY: Jackson backstop Daulton Varsho's breakout day on 4/14 vs. Chattanooga marked the third time in his career he's homered and stolen a base in one game, having accomplished the feat twice in 2018. Only four MLB catchers have ever recorded a homer-and-steal game 4 or more times in a season: Russell Martin (4, 2008), Carlton Fisk (4, 1983), Sandy Alomar (4, 1994), and Ivan Rodriguez (5, 1999).
