Generals fall to Icehawks 8-6 in exhibition game

PORT HURON, MI - There were plenty of goals and fights in the first exhibition game between the Flint Generals and the Port Huron Icehawks on Friday night at McMorran Place Arena. When the last goal was tallied the Generals dropped a 8-6 decision to the Icehawks.

The majority of the offense was netted in the third period with a combined 10 goals by the two teams. Scoring in the third period for Flint were Rusty McKie, Kris Mallette, Dan Kohanchuk and Derrick Ryan. The two teams see-sawed in the final frame trading goals until Port Huron pulled away with three in the final three minutes.

The Flint Generals and the Port Huron Icehawks will meet again on Saturday night and this time at Perani Arena and Event Center at 7:30 pm. All seats are just $5 and if there is any indication from Friday's game, it should be another terrific game.

The first woman of hockey Manon Rheaume played the first period in goal for the Icehawks. Rheaume is promoting her new foundation during the stop in Port Huron. It took 1:09 of the first period where we saw the first two fights. Rusty McKie took on Rory Smith, while Bill Horton took on Paul Yovanic. The Generals killed off a 5 on 3 in the first five minutes of the period. The Icehawks opened up the scoring when Tab Lardner scored on a wrist shot. The Generals tied the game when Nick Bet scored from the point from Josef Budaj and Matt Carinci. The Generals took a 2-1 lead when Justin Styffe scored on a pretty goal unassisted beating Manon Rheaume.

In the second period, the Generals got running around inside their own end and the Icehawks would capitalize to tie the game when Frank Fudero's shot went off of Jordan Alford and in. Jeff Zehr notched an assist.

The Icehawks took a 3-2 lead when Kerry Bowman tallied 37 seconds into the third period. However, the Generals pulled even when Rusty McKie netted a marker from Ben Boudreau at 1:24. Port Huron retook the lead on quick pass play between Jeremy Tucker and Jeff Zehr. The Generals again pulled even when Kris Mallette scored in front of the net. Dan Kohanchuk gave the Generals on a 5-4 advantage on a shot from the high slot area. Port Huron pulled even when Rick Ferroni scored on a rebound at 9:41.
