Icheawks Top Flint 8-6 In Exhibition Game

PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Icehawks defeated the Flint Generals 8-6 on Friday in a high scoring preseason game at McMorran Arena.

Icehawks newcomer Nicklas Lindberg turned in a goal and three assists in an offensive battle that saw the Icehawks outshoot the Generals 58-26.

Icehawks forward Tab Lardner opened the offensive onslaught with a goal at 7:10 in the first period. He was assisted by Jeremy Tucker and Brett Aimone. Flint responded with a pair of power play goals to pull to a 2-1 lead before the first period came to a close.

Port Huron tied the game when rookie Frank Furdero scored on a pass from Jeff Zehr near the end of the second period. In the third period, the lead changed hands frequently as the two teams combined for ten goals. Lidstrom scored the game winner at 17:41 on an assist from Furdero. Zehr then secured the win at 19:00 with an empty net insurance goal.

The two teams renewed their intense rivalry with a physical game that saw a total of 37 penalties for 128 penalty minutes. Icehawks rookies Paul Yovanic and Rory Smith each dropped the gloves twice. The Icehawks were scoreless in five power play opportunities, while the Generals were 3-9 on the power play.

Manon Rheaume, the only woman to ever play in the National Hockey League, played the first period in goal for the Icehawks and turned away eight of ten shots. She was relieved by Mike Minard, who stopped 12 of 16 shots.

The Icehawks travel to Flint tomorrow night to wrap up the home-and-home exhibition series with the Generals.

The Icehawks open the International Hockey League regular season with a Turner Cup Finals rematch versus the Fort Wayne Komets at home on Friday, October 17. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a free tailgate party in front of McMorran Arena. Don't miss free food, entertainment, face painting and fun.
