Flint Generals News Release
FLINT, MI - The Flint Generals of the United Hockey League announce that center Dan Beland and defenseman Ryan Rome have been released from the club effective immediately. The Generals continue to strengthen the line up announcing the signing of rugged defenseman Mario Joly (pronounced Joe-Lee) and speedy center Dominic Perna. In keeping with club policy, terms of the agreement shall not be disclosed.
Rookie Center and Montreal, PQ native Dan Beland, 22, was in his second year with the Generals. This season, Beland appeared in 58 games with two goals, seven assists for nine points and 42 penalty minutes. Defenseman Ryan Rome appeared in 59 games with one goal, two assists for three points and 139 penalty minutes. The 24-year old native of Nesbitt, Manitoba was claimed off waivers by the Generals early in the season.
To bolster the line up, the Generals have signed two players from the Laval Chiefs (QSMHL). Defenseman Mario Joly comes to the team after appearing in 49 games with the Chiefs with seven goals, 17 assists for 24 points and 205 penalty minutes. Joly, age 23, is 6-5, 235 lbs. He has appeared in one game in the United Hockey League with the Quad City Mallards during the 2001-2002 Colonial Cup Playoffs.
Also joining the Generals is speedy winger Dominic Perna, a 27-year old native of Montreal, PQ. Perna is 5-6, 170 lbs and is a high scoring winger whom has spent all or parts of the last five seasons with Laval Chiefs. This season in 50 games, Perna had 32 goals, 45 assists for 77 points and 12 penalty minutes.
"We are extremely pleased about the signing of these players," said Vice President/Head Coach, Robbie S. Nichols. "Mario Joly is a tough customer whom solidifies our blue line and will clear traffic. He will let you know he is there. Dominic Perna is a speedy and solid winger whom will bring us the additional offensive threat and intensity we will need in preparation for a big run at the Colonial Cup Championship."
Nichols also knows that releasing players can be the most difficult part of any coaching job. "Releasing players, especially at this time of the year, isn't the easiest thing to do. The Flint Generals would like to thank Dan Beland and Ryan Rome for their hard work throughout the season. We wish them nothing but the best in their future endeavors."
Joly and Perna are expected to be in the line-up on Wednesday, March 24, 204 as the Generals host the Muskegon Fury at 7:05 p.m. at Perani's Hockey World Arena & Event Center. Ticket prices are $12.00, $10.00 & $8.00. Student tickets are discounted $2.00 off regular price. Children's tickets, ages 2-12 are only $6.00. Tickets are on sale at any TicketMaster location.
