Oshawa Generals News Release

Oshawa, ON - October 23rd, 2011 - Oshawa scored four goals in the third period Sunday night, but it wasn't enough as they fell 7-6 to Saginaw before a crowd of 3,412 at the Generals Motors Centre.

Generals goaltender, Kevin Bailie, made 16 saves in the opening frame, but Saginaw's offense generated too many dangerous scoring chances to handle. In all, the Spirit struck three times including a beautiful goal by John McFarland who roofed a power play goal from the top of the circles.

Near goals for Oshawa included Andy Andreoff whistling a shot off of the right post and Cole Cassels beating two defenders before being stopped by Spirit netminder, Jake Patterson. Cassels pulled out all of the stops and Patterson literally needed every inch of his body to stop the puck from crossing the line. After one, the Spirit led 3-0.

Dan Altshuller came on to play goal for the Generals in the second period, but the Spirit kept the pressure on and Brandon Saad one- timed home his 8th goal of the season.

Christian Thomas one-timed a rebound past Patterson after a brilliant JP Labardo rush where he stormed in on goal and fired a hard wrist shot on the Saginaw net. With the deficit cut to three, Oshawa's foot speed in the attacking zone forced the Spirit to take penalties. Christian Thomas almost struck again on a power play one-timer from the point, but Patterson went coast-to-coast to make the save keeping the score 4-1.

But Oshawa's spark hadn't died yet, and with seconds left in the frame, Captain Boone Jenner muscled a wrist shot through Patterson after calling for the puck in the slot. The 19:55 power play marker was assisted by Lucas Lessio who blazed down the wing and found the Captain out front. After 2 periods, the Generals were right back in the game down 4-2 heading into the third.

In the final twenty, Oshawa showed their resilience. Down 5-2, defenseman Nick Quinn jumped into the rush and scored his first of the season sneaking a clever wrist shot right under the Saginaw netminder's left pad. Down 6-3, the Generals bounced back again, this time, Emerson Clark was the culprit scoring his second goal in as many nights, a wrist shot over Patterson's right shoulder. Andreoff and Lessio each scored late in the frame to tighten the score, but in the end, Saginaw's lead was too much to overcome. At the final buzzer, the Spirit held on, just barely, edging out the Generals 7-6 on the night.

Nicklas Jensen had three assists in the game. Jenner, Lessio, Andreoff and Labardo all had multiple point efforts in the loss.

Oshawa's next home game is this Friday October 28th vs. the Belleville Bulls at the General Motors Centre. Start time is 7:35 PM.
