Oshawa Generals News Release
Tonight, the Oshawa Generals hit the ice at the Tribute Communities Centre for their second home game of the 2018-2019 season against the rival Peterborough Petes. Heading into the game, the Gens held a record of 3-3-0-0 in their first six games, looking to grab two points before finishing off their weekend at home this Sunday against the Hamilton Bulldogs.
1st Period:
The Gens opened the game with a surge of offensive pressure in their first couple of shifts but were scored on early by the Petes when the play returned to their end, putting them down 1-0. Despite going down early, the Gens battled back and were able to pot one of their own just under nine minutes into the period. The goal came off a beautiful pass by Nando Eggenberger from the corner to the front of the net where Allan McShane shot the puck past Peterborough goalie Hunter Jones. Oshawa kept up the pressure after the goal and were able to keep the Petes pinned in their end to generate some good looks on net in the latter half of the period. In the last two minutes of the first, the Petes had a quality offensive chance that was turned away with a huge stop from Generals goalie Kyle Keyser. Shortly after the save, Peterborough took a penalty to give the Gens a man advantage for the final minute of the period. Although coming close, they weren't able to score to end the first, giving them just under a minute of powerplay time to start the second.
2nd Period:
The Petes managed to kill off the final minute of the Gens powerplay to start the period, keeping the game tied at 1-1. Oshawa carried their strong pressure into the second, getting some quality offensive chances and giving the Petes no room to make plays. At just over five minutes into the period, the Gens received a boarding penalty to put them down a man. With two huge blocked shots from Mitchell Brewer and a few great saves from Keyser, the Gens killed of the Petes powerplay attempt. Keeping up the offensive zone pressure as the period progressed, the Gens piled on shots and were outshooting the Petes 28 to 14 with five minutes left in the second. Oshawa took a penalty with four minutes remaining in the second, in which the Petes were able to capitalize on the opportunity and take a 2-1 lead. Shortly after the Peterborough goal, the Gens took another penalty to go back on the PK but turned into 4-on-4 action after a minute when the Petes took a penalty of their own. As the Gens penalty expired, the team had just under a minute of powerplay time that they weren't able to score on, leaving them trailing 2-1 to end the second period.
3rd Period:
The Petes got called for a boarding penalty to start the third period, giving the Gens an opportunity on the powerplay. Halfway through their man advantage, the Gens took a penalty of their own to return to even strength. With the Petes player returning from the box, the Gens had a shortened penalty kill in which Keyser came up big with a few key saves to keep the game at 2-1 for Peterborough. With just under twelve minutes left in the game, the Petes took a penalty to give the Gens another powerplay chance. After it looked as though Oshawa had tied the game on a blast from Nick Wong, the goal was called back with the play being ruled offside. The Gens had a ton of chances in the remaining time on the man advantage put weren't able to put one in. With five minutes left in the game, Serron Noel made an incredible play to cut in from the left wing and drive to the net hard but wasn't able to slide the puck past the Petes goalie. At just under the two-minute mark left in period, the Gens pulled their goalie in a final attempt to tie the game. While they had a ton of pressure with the net empty, the Gens couldn't get the tying goal, ending the game at 2-1 for the Petes.
After falling to the Petes in a close contest, the Gens will look to bounce back from the loss in their second home game of the weekend on Sunday when the Hamilton Bulldogs arrive in town.
