June 9, 2014 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL)
Victoria Generals News Release
Dallas, TX - After back to back losses for the first time, including one in extra innings last night; the Generals got back into form with a 13-5 win tonight over the Texas Marshals. With the victory, the Generals were able to split the series and stay close atop the Texas Collegiate League standing with the Brazos Valley Bombers.
Drake Roberts and Blake Cooper led the way at the plate for the G-Men, while Ryan Benitez threw 6 strong innings. Roberts went 3 for 4 and scored 2 of the Generals' runs. Cooper drove in the most runs (3), along with centerfielder Kyle Danford. Cooper also went 2 for 4 with 2 runs and a walk.
The bats were clicking early, as the Generals scored 2 runs in the top of the 1st. Following back to back singles by Alvaro Rondon and Roberts, Dayfran Ortiz drove them both in on a double.
The scoring barrage would continue in the 3rd, as Matthew Burks led off the inning with a double and would score the first of 5 runs on an error by the Marshal's pitcher. Cooper would come up later in the inning and with the bases loaded and drive them all in on a double, scoring Rondon, Portelli, and Ortiz. Cedric Vallieres drove in Cooper for the final run of the inning on a single. 4 of the 5 runs would go down unearned following the error.
Benitez's threw 5 shutout innings to open the game, but the Marshals would get on the board for 3 runs in the 6th. After a leadoff walk and single, Chase Daughdrill drove in 2 runs on a triple. Daudgdrill would score the 3rd run of the inning on a groundout, and that would be all the Marshals could muster off of Benitez.
Portelli hit a 2-run homer in the 4th, and Burks hit a solo shot in the 5th to bring the score to 10-0. The Marshals' big inning would come in the following inning.
The Generals would score their final runs of the game on a Kyle Danford 3 run homer in the 7th.
Springer came into the game in relief for Benitez and would allow 2 more runs to score in the 8th. Carlos Contreras scored on a passed ball, and Jace Reese scored the final Marshal's run on a groundout.
The Generals are very proud to congratulate: Argenis Angulo, Drake Roberts, and Taylor Hearn for being taken over the weekend in the MLB Draft.
