Eight Current, Former Bombers Selected in MLB Draft

Bryan-College Station, TX (June 9, 2014) - The 2014 MLB Draft took place from June 5 through June 7, and the Brazos Valley Bombers had eight current and former players selected.

The first Bombers off the board were a pair of former starting pitchers in Middle Tennessee State left-hander Zac Curtis and Sam Houston State right-hander Tyler Eppler, both of whom were selected in the sixth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks and Pittsburgh Pirates respectively. Curtis went 5-1 as a starter for the Bombers in 2013, recording a 1.61 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 39 innings of work. Eppler was 1-0 in two starts with the Bombers in 2012.

Florida International pitcher Mike Franco was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the seventh round. Franco was 9-3 with a 1.09 ERA this season with the Panthers.

Shortstop Corey Toups, another Bearkat and Bombers alum, was taken in the 15thround by the Kansas City Royals. Toups hit .291 with the Bombers in 2012 in 38 games.

College Station native Brannon Easterling was selected in the 20thround by the Chicago White Sox. Easterling, a product of St. Edwards University, went 3-0 with the Bombers in 2013 with a 2.20 ERA.

A pair of current Bombers pitchers in Gabriel Klobosits and Matt Blackham were selected by the Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets in the 25thand 29throunds respectively. Blackham was 1-0 with 14 strikeouts in 9 innings this season, and joins Curtis in representing both the Bombers and the Blue Raiders in the pros.

The final player to represent the Bombers in the draft was Texas A&M pitcher Parker Ray, who was selected in the 38thround by the Miami Marlins. The right-hander was 5-0 in 10 appearances with the Bombers in 2013, earning a save in the Bombers' 7-5 win over the Victoria Generals that earned the team the 2013 Texas Collegiate League Championship.
