Gems Fall to Mallards 5-2 Tuesday Night in Quad City
February 7, 2012 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
Moline, Ill - Despite leading the game into the second period, the Dayton Gems wouldn't be able to stop the Quad City Mallards and their top ranked powerplay from coming from behind for a 5-2 loss on Tuesday night inside the iWireless Center. Scoring for the Gems were Jon Ornelas and Brett Lutes.
Starting off a tough four-in-five game slate this week, the Gems fired out of the gates early against the Mallards, showing early signs of promise both offensively as well as between the pipes with Larry Sterling coming up with some big saves against the Flock in the opener. Dayton's Jon Ornelas would kickstart the Gems offense by snapping in a rebound goal, his fourteenth of the year, at the 17:19 mark to lead his team into the first intermission ahead 1-0. Shots on goal through the first twenty minutes would favor the Mallards 13-9.
Picking up right where they left off, the Gems would extend their lead to two with a controversial goal by Brett Lutes just 2:13 into the stanza. Lutes's goal, his twelfth of the season, trickled past the foot of Mallards netminder David Brown and into the net to light the lamp off an assist by Ornelas. The Mallards would begin to awaken in the second half of the period when they blasted a shot past Sterling from the far point at the 12:54 before knocking in a greasy tying goal with less than a minute remaining in the frame as both teams skated into the second intermission deadlocked at 2. Shots in the second period would favor the Gems 13-11.
The third period would be all Mallards, with their go-ahead goal coming just 1:49 in, and they wouldn't look back, securing the 5-2 win with two more unanswered goals by the final horn. Through a chippy and penalty filled third period, the final Shots in the third period told the story, with the Gems registering just two, compared to Quad City's 14.
With the loss, the Gems record falls to 15-21-8, while they fall to 2-5-2 this season against the Mallards.
The Gems busy week continues on Thursday night when they return home to host the Bloomington Blaze on Cassano's Italian Ice at Hara Arena at 7pm. Thursday night is the final "Thirsty Thursday" of the season, featuring select $1 draft beers and a limited edition Damian Surma stadium cup giveaway for the first 500 fans.
