Gary Southshore Pitchers Shut Down Worcester 2-0

July 15, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

After back-to-back thrilling games Friday and Saturday that were littered with home runs and back-and-forth play, Sunday's game between the Tornadoes and RailCats turned into a pitcher's duel. Chris Torres and Stephen Hiscock traded zero's through the first six innings before a two-run Gary SouthShore eight proved the difference in the RailCats 2-0 win at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field.

Torres who was making his first professional start after 26 relief appearances over six season, went six and two-thirds innings allowing just two hits and no runs. The knuckleballer kept the RailCats off-balance all afternoon long, striking out two and allowing just three batters to reach over the first six innings.

On the opposite side, Hiscock was just as good, going six innings allowing six hits and no runs in his first start off the disabled list. Six RailCats pitcher's combined for the shutout, as the Tornadoes mustered just eight hits and 10 base runners overall in their third straight loss.

Worcester had the better chances over the first six innings but left four base runners against Hiscock. Brandon Pinckney extended his hitting streak to eight games with two singles and Tony Patane added two singles of his own in the loss.

The RailCats failed to get any offense going until the seventh inning, when Brian Kolb walked, Mike Rohde singled and Matt Forgatch was intentionally walked to end Torres' night. Kyle Regnault came on in relief with two outs and the bases loaded and induced a flyout from Chris Carrara to leave the bases loaded.

Regnault's six inning scoreless streak ended the next inning as the RailCats finally broke through. David Cooper led off with a bunt single and Adam Klein followed with a single through the left-side to put runners on first and second and no outs. After a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners up, Brian Kolb walked to load the bases. With the count even at 2-2, Mike Rohde hit a hard grounded through the right side that Tony Patane chased down but couldn't beat Rohde first as Cooper scored. Regnault walked Ryan Babineau to make it 2-0 RailCats, before striking out Matt Forgatch to end the rally.

Worcester would put two runners on in the eight inning with two outs, when Ryan Brockett reached on an error and Alex Nunez singled through the left side. But with two outs Marshall Schuler came on and struck out Mike Samela.

Schuler who earned his second save of the season pitched a 1-2-3 ninth as Worcester fell for the fifth time in six games.

The Tornadoes will be back in action on Monday when they face the New Jersey Jackals at 7:05 p.m. Dan Sausville will make the start for the Tornadoes as they face the Jackals for just the second series this year.
