Can-Am New Jersey Jackals

Salotti's Go-Ahead Home Run In Ninth Helps Jackals To Victory

July 15, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release

With the score tied 3-3 and two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Jackals newcomer Nick Salotti's solo home run to left-center field off Adrian Martin gave the Jackals a 4-3 lead. A few hits and an eventful ninth inning later, the Jackals topped the Boulders 6-5 on a muggy Sunday afternoon in Pomona, New York.

The Jackals followed Salotti's home run with a Carlos Guzman triple and a Matt Nandin double to go up 6-3. In the bottom of the ninth, a few base hits and an error put Landis Wilson on first base with two outs in a 6-5 ballgame. The Jackals would exhale as Chris Valencia lined out to left field.

Adrian Martin absorbs the loss to drop to 4-3. He throws two-thirds of an inning, allowing three runs off three hits.

Jeff Gogal threw a scoreless eighth inning an earns the win to improve to 3-1. All of Gogal's wins this season have come against the Boulders.

Keith Cantwell dances his way to his ninth save of the season. In a stressful frame, Cantwell allows two unearned runs off two hits. He sits one back of Newark's Jorge Vazquez who leads the Can-Am League with 10 saves.

In the first inning, Francisco Carraballo would single home Chris Curran to give the Jackals the early 1-0 lead. Nick Giarraputo would follow with his 17th home run of the season to put the Jackals up 3-0. Seven Jackals goose eggs sandwiched the pair of three-run innings.

Boulders starter Jon Velasquez earns the no-decision. He went eight innings and allowed just the three first inning runs off seven total hits. He walked one and did not strike out a batter.

Jackals starter Steve Fox was very good in the no-decision. He went seven full innings and allowed three runs, two earned, off seven base hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

In a two-hour, thirty-three minute ballgame, the Jackals earn their 30th win of the season. New Jersey's 30-24 record is good for six games behind the idle Quebec Capitales. More importantly, it suppresses the surging Boulders who are creeping up on the final Can-Am playoff spot the Jackals currently possess.

Tomorrow, the Jackals will head up to Worcester to begin a three-game set against the Tornadoes. Dustin Birosak (0-1, 4.11) will make his first start since last season with the Brockton Rox. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. The pregame show begins 10 minutes prior.

The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
