Garcia Throws Seven Scoreless Innings as Champions Beat Aigles 1-0

OTTAWA - After a dramatic come-from-behind victory over the first-place Sussex County Miners on Thursday, the Ottawa Champions came out on the right side of a pitcher's duel on Friday, beating the Trois-Rivières Aigles 1-0.

Danny Garcia went seven strong, whiffing six batters and allowing just three hits and no runs. Champions manager Sébastien Boucher gave his pitching staff a lot of credit for their work.

"Garcia had a great night," said Boucher. "He really worked quickly and effectively and he was able to really shut them down. Then we had Rutckyj that came in and was able to shut it down in his inning and Glorius right behind him. So whenever guys are able to do things like that and we have the support of the defense and we make plays we have a chance to win the ball game."

After a walking a career-high seven batters in his last outing, Garcia knew he had work to do before this start.

"I felt like that was all mental, the last outing," said Garcia. "I came in today and the last four days and I worked and made sure it didn't happen again. I was just going out there and competing and not letting the last results dictate my performance today."

It took an error from Aigles shortstop Thomas Roulis to finally break the deadlock. Nick DeTringo grounded a routine ball to Roulis, who fumbled it, allowing DeTringo to reach first and Andy Mocahbee to score.

Eduard Pinto preserved the lead for the Champions in the top of the eighth when Tucker Nathans hit a line drive to left. Joe DeLuca went home from second but Pinto made a great throw to catcher Larry Balkwill to get DeLuca at the plate.

After struggling the last few games, Boucher thinks that the great defensive play should help Pinto get out of his funk.

"I think he's been getting a bit frustrated in himself," said Boucher, "and that play kind of turned it around for him. He was able to come up big, make a big play and save the day, and he came right back and got a double."

"I'm happy he was able to make that play and come up big for us, and I'm happy he was able to relax and do what he can do at the plate."

The Champions look to make it three straight wins on Saturday when they welcome the Aigles back for Game 2 of the three-game set. Heath Bowers will be on the mound for Ottawa when the game starts at 7:05 p.m. at RCGT Park.
