Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Luis Garcia blasted his fifth home run of the season, and the Clearwater Threshers celebrated a 2-1 victory and Independence Day with fireworks on July 3.
Garcia greeted the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot over the fence in center field to jump on the scoreboard and gave Clearwater (28-25) an early 1-0 lead.
St. Lucie (28-25) tied the game in the top of the fourth. Alex Ramirez led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. With two away, Matt Dyer drew a walk and Warren Saunders followed with a line-drive single to load the bases. Cole Kleszcz drew a walk and, with nowhere else to put the base runner, Ramirez crossed the plate, and the Mets evened the score 1-1.
Leading off the sixth inning, Garcia rocketed a triple on a sharp fly ball to center field and later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Johan Rojas. Garcia finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run in the contest, scoring both Threshers' runs of the night.
Clearwater starter Eduar Segovia did not factor in the decision. Segovia gave up one run on two hits, walking two and striking out six batters in five innings on the mound. Victor Vargas (3-0) earned the win for the Threshers. Vargas allowed three hits while striking out five and did not permit a walk in four scoreless innings of relief.
The Threshers and Mets face each other for the series finale on Sunday afternoon. RHP Fernando Lozano (3-1) gets the nod for the Threshers against RHP David Griffin (0-0) for the Mets. The first pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. on Independence Day at BayCare Ballpark. TICKETS
