Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Louie Varland struck out nine Saturday, but the Mighty Mussels managed only five hits in a 1-0 loss to the Bradenton Marauders at Hammond Stadium.
Mighty Mussels (30-23) catcher Charles Mack went 2-for-4 and helped the Mussels put the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth, but pinch runner Nick Anderson was thrown out at third to end the game.
Varland (3-2) reached nine strikeouts for the third time this year, and did not allow a walk the entire night. He lowered his season ERA to a team-best 1.91.
Relievers Denny Bentley and Carlos Suniaga combined for three perfect innings in back of Varland. They each fanned two.
Despite the loss, the Mighty Mussels packed a season-best crowd of 3,872 into Hammond Stadium.
The Mussels search for a series split at 7 p.m. on Sunday. Bobby Milacki (0-0, 2.92) makes the start for Fort Myers, opposed by Jared Jones (1-0, 2.41) of the Marauders (35-18). Coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on the Mighty Mussels Baseball Network.
